Notes for C
ARL CHRISTIAN SMITH:
Story has it that when Carl was a very young man, he was going to be allowed to go with his father on the very next voyage. But Carl's siblings came down with some illness and Carl had to stay behind and help his mother take care of the sick children. It was on this voyage that Carl's father was lost at sea. (Evidently went down with the boat.)
Carl was a fisherman, and a farmer, and he raised oysters.
On his farm he had oyster beds, smoke-house, garden, chickens, cows, pigs, fruit trees, berries(including a seedless tame blackberry), grapes, a bull for beef, a dock with a shed, a barn, a well, a water system coming from a lake above the farm, and a float off the dock that boats tied up to.
He had two boats, "The Flying Cloud",(a purseinner), and "The Baby"(a run-about). He once harpooned a whale and hauled it home. Doug remembers the skeleton of that whale sat on the dock for some time. He also remembers Carl's "tin pants".They were tan-colored cover-alls made from material called "oil-skin". Probably a heavy oil-cloth like they used to make tablecloths out of.
Carl was a man of medium height, and medium build, light brown hair and a heavy mustache. He was quite outspoken with a slight Danish accent. He liked to pull pranks but was not a very good loser. He'd get mad when losing at cards.
He liked to show his strength. Doug remembers him holding the spoked wheel of their Model T , keeping it from going when they were leaving one time. Doug remembers Carl putting his hands around Hansine's neck and lifting her off the ground. She was so frail and small, it didn't hurt her. It was all in fun.
Doug remembers Carl having put together a ship in a bottle.

Notes for H
ANSINE PAULINA HANSEN:
Most believe that Hansine became pregnant with Anna before she ever met Carl. Whether it happened in Denmark, back east or on the way over here, nobody seems to know for sure. But all say that Carl was not the father, and that she was pregnant before she got here. In fact they say that her pregnancy was part of the reason she did come here. She came to stay with her sister, Tonda Ivarson, in Tacoma.
Doug remembers her as being small, frail, gray-haired, and having a strong Danish accent. She used to sit in a rocking chair, by the stove, and knit. She knitted him what she called a "hug-me tight". It was a sweater-vest. He says he lost it. Doug thinks she might have had some health problems, possibly female problems because of the way all the way the female relatives waited on her and fussed over her, and because of how frail she always looked. However, he says, she couldn't have been too awfully frail to have lived as long as she did.
Doug always had the impression (from things he saw and heard), that Carl's mom didn't approve of Hansine, and thought that Carl married beneath himself.
