Notes for WILLIAM PEDDICOURTE:
From The Complete Book of Emigrants, 1607-1776, by Peter Wilson Coldham, 1218.5, pg. 223:
25 October 1666. The following apprenticed in Bristol: Anne Manning to Nicholas Wyatt, 7 years Virginia; Samuell Dryer to same, 7 years Virginia; Charles Rawlins to same, 4 years Virginia; William Petticourte to same, 4 years Virginia; Justinian Brankenwell to same, 5 years Virginia; Elizabeth New to John Crock, 4 years Virginia. (BR).
25 October 1666-6 November 1666. Shipper by the Francis of Topsham, Mr. William Wilcox, bound from Exeter for Virginia: William Ware. (PRO E190/954/7). (Editor's Note: I don't know if this was the ship he traveled on or not.)
Another opinion: William Petticourte was transported into Maryland before 1666 by Cornelius Howard, when Howard received a grant (headrights) for the transport. He lived at "Petticoat's Rest," 100 acres surveyed for him on the south side of the Severn Riber, 8 July 1679. This land was apparently in the Bay Ridge area south of Annapolis (between South River and Back Creek). He sold this land to Thomas Freeborne on 13 June 1684/5. Edward Dorsey was witness to the deed. He is believed to have been the father of John Petticoat, born ca.1669 (Maryland Historical Magazine, Vol. 25, pg. 212).
In Maryland Rent Rolls, William Pettycoat had 100 acres surveyed 8 July 1679 called "Petticoat's Rest," bounded by the land of Daniel Edge and by a swamp. This parcel is also described in a 1687 deed for Norwoods Angles as bounding Norwoods Angles on a branch of Todds Creek; Norwoods Angles also bound by the land of Thomas Todd and John Baldwyn. (Since William was definitely along the Severn River along with families such as the Dorseys and Norwoods, it appears reasonable to assume John Petticourt was his son.)
From Perogative Court of Maryland: William Peticoat is on the list of debts of the inventory of the estate of Robert Franklin of Anne Arundel County, 7 November 1682; among others listed as early Anne Arundel County settlers such as Mathew Howard, Richard Warfield and Nicholas Greenbury, progenitors of prominent Anne Arundel County families. A "Ruth Petticoat" appears under "payments to" in the administration of the estate of William Lewis of Anne Arundel County 4 August 1712 (apparently no will for William Lewis.) Is this Ruth the wife of William Peddicourte? The will of Joseph Pettibone of Anne Arundel County, MD, dated 10 September 1698, and proved 9 May 1699, leaves personality to cousin John Tucker and to Richard Petticoat.
Child of WILLIAM PEDDICOURTE and SARAH/RUTH LEWIS is:
