Notes for NICHOLAS VIEILLAR:
      The Williard name had its origins in the Caen region of France (Normandy). At the time of the Norman Invasion of England in 1066, Vieillards were included in part of the invasion force. The Williards of English heritage trace their lineage through this line. Those remaining in Normandy settled around Sedan and, with the sweeping tide of Protestantism, became Huguenots. In the early 17th Century they migrated to the Pfalz (Palatinate) region of Germany, due to persecution by the Catholic majority. Our family has its known origins in the Palatinate in the city of Otterberg near Kaiserlautern (the Kaiser's summer home). Otterberg is a city settled in the Twelfth Century by French Premonstrant Monks. During the Reformation the town became predominately Protestant. Nicholas Vieillar was born in Otterburg, in 1635. His parents are unknown. In 1654 he moved on the Gersweiler Hof (road) near Erlenbach (between Bornberg and Morleutern). He married Katherine GrosJean, a native of Sedan, France, and had seven known children. (From "The Smith Clan," by Doris Haven, p. 250)
