SOLOMON KERNERSVILLE -- Mr. Francis Darwin Solomon, 60, of 3875 Kernersville Road, died Monday, June 1, 1998, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Solomon was born in Forsyth County a son of Odell and Elizabeth Smith Solomon and was a graduate and star athlete from Glenn High School. Mr. Solomon was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he studied drama and went on to live and work in New York and California. He retired from acting in 1994 and moved back to Kernersville to enjoy the easy life of retirement. Surviving are a son, S. Shawn Solomon and wife, Amy, of Los Angeles; his parents of Kernersville; a brother, Talmadge Solomon of Kernersville; his former wife, Josephine Cook Solomon of Glendale, California; and his fiancee', Janie Posey Swaim of Kernersville. Funeral services will be conducted 7 p.m. Thursday at the Oaklawn Baptist Church by Rev. Paul Riggs and Rev. Talmadge Solomon. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society, 1900 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

SOLOMON KERNERSVILLE -- Mr. Francis Darwin Solomon, 60, of 3875 Kernersville Road, died Monday, June 1, 1998, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Solomon was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he studied drama and went on to live and work in New York and California. Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, June 4, 1998 at the Oaklawn Baptist Church by Rev. Paul Riggs and Rev. Talmadge Solomon. After careful consideration by Darwin's surviving family members, as well as his fellow UNC Chapel Hill Playmaker Alumni, it was agreed by all that Darwin was and will always be a follower of David rather than Goliath, despite his fondness for his days at Chapel Hill. To this end, a fund has been established in Darwin's name and memory at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Donations may be made to the F. Darwin Solomon Endowment, c/o North Carolina School of the Arts, 1533 South Main Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27127-2188. Mr. Kirkman was born in Forsyth Co., a son of Gothard Orlando and Leva Lucille Dean Kirkman and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served in the 82nd Airborne Division Glider Infantry. Surviving are two daughters, Wanda Kay Brooks and her friend Buddy Nelson, of Greensboro, and Cindy and Kyle Paris, of Lilburn, Ga.; a son, Tony and Janet Kirkman of Kernersville; four sisters, Lucille Barrow, Carol Hobson, Bernice Roberson, and Betty Idol, all of Kernersville; a brother, Grady Kirkman of Kernersville; seven grandchildren, Brian Kirkman, Eric Marshall, Justin Kirkman, Dylan Kirkman, Alan Paris, Angie Rice and Andrea Andrews; and a great-granddaughter, Alexandra Rice. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.       KIRKMAN KERNERSVILLE -- Mr. Dewey Carl ''DC'' Kirkman, 93, formerly of 738 Graves St. and a resident of the Bradford Village East died Thursday, October 29, 1998 at the Bradford Village. Mr. Kirkman was born in Forsyth Co., a son of the late Albert A. and Eliza Jane Smith Kirkman and was a member of the Bunker Hill Primitive Church. His first business venture was operating a country store in Colfax and in 1936, he moved to Kernersville and opened Kirkman's Appliance Store where he sold Maytag washers and Philco radios. Moving to greet new challenges, Mr. Kirkman moved to Mt. Airy where he continued in the furniture and appliance business; he was later a salesman for the B&W Upholstery Co. and decided to move back to Kernersville and built the Pony Motel and operated it for a number of years. He founded Kirkman Realty and operated it as long as his health permitted. Mr. Kirkman was an avid showman, participating in the local horse shows and parades for many years. Surviving are his wife, Lela Mosley Kirkman of the Bradford Village East; a daughter and son-in-law, Carlene K. and Tony Dockery of Atlanta; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be conducted 12:30pm Saturday at the Bunker Hill Primitive Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Bunker Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9pm Friday at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home.

Kirkman and Associates who represented the furniture industry for many years. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, member of the Mt. Airy Country Club, member of the Mt. Airy Elk's Lodge, and a member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Airy. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Pauline M. Kirkman of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Fred Marchi of Mt. Airy; one granddaughter, Miss Jessica Ann Marchi of Mt. Airy; his father and stepmother, D. Airy conducted by Dr. Paul Ridolfi with burial to follow in the Skyline Memory Gardens in Mt. Airy.
