Notes for S
AMUEL HARRIS:
Samuel Harris was born April 21, 1763 at Mount Pleasant, Nova Scotia and married Elizabeth Evans Jefferson (1779-1845) on June 4, 1798. It is said that when Samuel Harris was about 16 years old he called on Robert Jefferson, with whom he was only slightly acquainted. Jefferson placed his infant daughter Elizabeth in Samuel's arms with the words, "Here is a wife for you". About 19 years later Samuel did marry Elizabeth.

Elizabeth Evans Jefferson was the daughter of Elizabeth Evans and Robert Jefferson. Her grandfather, Henry Evans, was born December 19, 1725 "of respectable and influential parents in Carnarvon, Wales". He emigrated to Massachusetts and married Elizabeth, daughter of Captain David Baldwin and his wife Abigail Capen. Henry obtained a grant to settle immigrants in Nova Scotia and chartered the Charming Molly on 5 May 1760 to convey the settlers to Annapolis Valley. The first group landed June 25 and other groups followed in that year and in 1761. Henry and Elizabeth Evans, and their daughter Elizabeth (b 1756) came with one of the groups and settled at Round Hill. Henry Evans died November 2, 1782.

Some say that Elizabeth Jefferson was related, apparently, to Thomas Jefferson, the President of the United States of America.

Robert Jefferson was born in 1750 and emigrated from Hull, England in 1770. He landed in Halifax but soon moved on to Round Hill where he obtained employment with Harry Evans. Eighteen months later he married Henry's daughter, Elizabeth. The speculation on the link between Robert Jefferson and Thomas Jefferson is presented below.

The Thomas Jefferson Connection

Robert Jefferson was born in 1750 and emigrated from Hull, England in 1770. He landed in Halifax but soon moved on to Round Hill where he obtained employment with Harry Evans. Eighteen months later he married Henry's daughter, Elizabeth.

According to the notes of Mary Ann Harris (1806-1889), who was a sister to Robert Jefferson Harris (grandson of Robert), Robert Jefferson was the son of Stephen Jefferson, who was a brother of Thomas Jefferson, father of President Thomas Jefferson of the United States. Robert Jefferson's uncle Thomas took money which his father had made by selling his estate in Yorkshire and eloped to America with Jane Randolph, a young lady from London. In America he changed his name to Peter. Their son Thomas, later President, was born 2 April 1743. The President seldom alluded to his family and was shy in writing of family matters. This connection has not been definitely established.

Thomas Jefferson wrote his own autobiography on January 6, 1821 and included only a brief reference to his roots:

"The tradition of my father's family was, that their ancestor came to this country from Wales, and from near the mountain of Snowdon, the highest in Great Britain. ... The first particular information I have of any ancestor was of my grandfather..... He had three sons; Thomas who died young, Field who settled on the waters of Roanoke and left numerous descendants, and Peter, my father, who settled in the lands I still own..... He was born February 29, 1707/8, and intermarried 1739, with Jane Randolph, of the age of 19, daughter of Isham Randolph, one of the seven sons of that name and family, settled at Dungeoness in Goochland. They trace their pedigree far back in England and Scotland, to which let every one ascribe the faith and merit he chooses."

"My father's education had been quite neglected; but being of a strong mind, sound judgment, and eager after information, he read much and improved himself, insomuch that he was chosen, with Josua Fry, ..... To continue the boundary line between Virginia and North Carolina ..... and to make the first map of Virginia. .... He died August 17th, 1757, leaving my mother a widow, who lived till 1776, with six daughters and two sons, myself the elder." Selected notes from The Autobiography of Thomas Jefferson from The Life and Selected Writings of Thomas Jefferson, Edited by Adrienne Koch and William Peden, Random House, New York, 1993.

Not a word about his father being first known as Thomas, or changing his name. He doesn't even give us his grandfather's name. One is left to speculate.

Information from other histories of Thomas Jefferson, found in the FamilyTree Maker material, provides no links to our family. This leaves me with little evidence to confirm this link.

Elizabeth and Samuel Harris had eleven children. Their fourth son was our ancestor Robert Jefferson Harris.
