Notes for Sir John Horner:
Taken from www.rootsweb.com:

The plum referred to in the poem was the Abbey Estate and the righteousness of the Act consisted in the Disendowment of property.

Thomas Horner was Sheriff of Somerset.
page 23 - exerpts from the Pedigree of Horner, Co., Somerset (with a daughter of this house Capt. Harington of Corston and Kelston, Co., Somerset, secondly married).

John Horner of Stoke St. Michael, Co., Somerset, whose ancestors were of standing about Mells, and in the district of Mendip even before the dissolution of the Religious Houses, appears to have purchased the manor of Cloford of Roger Basing, Esq., of Cirencester, about 35 Henry VIII., and next year to have settled it upon his son, John Horner, jun., on the occasion of his marriage with Meriel Malte, daughter of John Malte, citizen and merchant tailor of London.

John Horner, jun., afterwards Knight of the Bath, became heir not only of his father's property, but also of the bulk of his uncle Sir Thomas Horner's estates in 1555. The Horner family became enriched by investing in the purchase of Grants from the Crown of some of the confiscated estates of such Religious Foundations as Glastonbury, Bruton, Bath, and Keynsham. Hence Horner is one of the names occurring in the old Somerset jingle--

"Windham and Horner, Barley and Thynne,
When the monks went out, they came in;"

and in the nursery rhyme that has amused more children than ever were born in Somerset:

            "Little Jack Horner
            Sat in a corner,
            Eating his Christmas pie,
            He put in his thumb,
            And pulled out a plum,
And he cried, "What a good boy am I!""

The plum here referred to we presume was an Abbey-estate, and the righteousness of the act consisted in the disendowment of Property.

After being married twice, Sir John Horner died September 24th, 1587, leaving his son and heir his estate. Thomas was 40 years of age.
