Notes for William Riley Spruell: William Riley Spruell enlisted, as a private, in the Union Army, 87th Regiment, Illinois Infantry on September 22, 1862. This unit participated in the Battle of Vicksburg. He mustered out on June 16, 1865. He had been held as a prisoner but records do not show where he was captured or held. He was granted a Civil War pension about 1888 and after his death his widow, Lavina, was granted a widow's pension.
