HARE -Johann &Anthony - Wuerttemberg Germany to CincinnatiUpdated February 12, 2011 |
Johann - Anthony HARE Johann Hare came from Wurttemberg Germany to Cincinnati, Ohio in the early 1830's by stage coach. He settled north of Liberty along Reading Road or what was then called the Lebanon Turnpike which ran through the Deer Creek Valley. John and Anthony were hog butchers in Porkropolus as Cincinnati was know in those days. Johann started a brewery in the mid 1850's. It was known as the John Hare Ohio Brewery. The brewery only survived for about five years. Two other Greater Cincinnati brewers got there start in John Hare's brewery. They were George Kauffmann and George Wiedemann both of whom went on to become successful brewers. A wall of John Hare's brewery still stands against Nanny Goat Hill at the foot of Liberty Hill along present day Reading Road across from Elsinore Avenue. John Hare also made sacramental wine for the churches in the area. In the 1850's vineyards covered both hillsides along the Deer Creek Valley. The vineyards did not survive because of blight. |
