Notes for HENRY PENDLETON SMITH ALSPAUGH:
This is a letter written to James Alspaugh , Greencastle,Ind by Henry P.S.Alspaugh .

Brancheville, Tenn. Feb.18th,1853

Dear Brother,
I take my pen in hand to write you a few lines to let you know that I am well and hope this letter will find you in good health. This will tell you of my bereavement, my wife is gone whence no traveler ever returns. She died last Nov.1852 of typhoid fever. My loss is great. I am left with three children to do the best we can, which is very bad. You know I have no relatives nearer than Ky. Am among strangers. It would be some satisfaction if I were near some of them. I should be glad to see you more so than I ever did before. You have no idea the life I now live. I am living alone and if it were not for my children death to me would be welcome at this time. I think of the past and the enjoyment that I once saw, but alas those days is gone to return to me no more in this life, but I hope that we will meet in Heaven. She said that she did not want me to grieve after her and she felt thankful that she was done with the trials and troubles of this world. She was entirely willing to go. She said she would be happy. I want you to write to me as soon as you get this. Direct your letters to Branchville

Tis Sunday afternoon---sacred the name
That turns my soul from life's all dirty track
Potent the sound which now comes to reclaim
A memory of the past which sends me back
To the beginning of my pilgrimage.
The dawning of my day-spring whose young gleam
Glanced on the wave that bares (sic) me on to age
Would that its glow were what it once did seem
E'en darker waters flowed to mingle with the stream.

Tis Sunday afternoon--once clustered around
Their Mother's feet three children mutely stood
Sacred was that sweet day and so scarce a sound
Save the wind's whisper reached their solitude
Then raised that Mother her bright eyes to Heaven
And craved a blessing on her little band
The heart renewed ,the peace of sin forgiven
The light of faith to guide them through life's sands
And bring them all at last unto the better land.

Days have passed on, no more the summers are
Comes laden with the odors as of yore
Nor mingles with the breath of Mother's prayer
That voice is hushed to sound again no more
The cloud has gathered now for aye to rest
In gloom upon the brow that care has plowed
And better thoughts sit breeding over my breast
While sickening fancies ever my dark brain crowned
And nought shall bring me rest but the coffin, tomb and shroud.

As I am not skilled in poetry you will look over these, this is some similiar to what took place two weeks before my wife died.

April the 3,1845 Garrard Co. Kentucky

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I take this opportunity to write you a few lines to let you know that I am well at this time and my family is well also. I have nothing of importance to write you, and being called on by Mr. Haggard with your complements which with the greatest of pleasure I recieved to hear from that country, and to hear from your welfare and family. Your connexion is all well as far as I know. Cosby (Uncle David Cosby) is living in Bryantsville and is well and Nelson is living near the mouth of Paint Lick and was well the last time I saw him. I am living three miles of Lancaster and have the prettiest wife and the smartest child of any man in all the world. Uncle Elias Tresner is dead, He died about the 20th of March and Aunt Sallie is feeble at this time and I am getting ready to start down the river and will start at the fine tide in the river. I was informed by Mr. Haggard that Peter Tresner was dead and that Barbara was in that country. I wish you to write to me as soon as this this comes to hand and let me know all about the matter as I will come and see you all some time between now and fall. Look over and excuse my bad production, so no more at present.
(Signed) H.P.S. and Elisabeth Alspaugh
