The Thirty Years' War ended in 1648 and the former Holy Roman Empire province of Alsatia became the province of Alsace, France. In 1808, Napoléon issued the Bayonne decree requiring the use of civil surnames by Jewish families. Abraham, probably in his mid-to-late twenties, took the noble name of Herzog, German for Duke and so became the first ancestor we know of with the name Herzog. |
