Walter Turner
, my great granddaddy, was 22 years old when he and his stepfather, Pompey Edwards, jointly purchased "three hundred and thirty acres of land, more or less. Nearly, 116 years later, a portion of this land, is the inherited property of, Bob Fitzsimmons, (Walter's son), and granddaughter. The Deed is as follows.1833 Southampton County Virginia Deed Book 37,108 21 April 1883
This Deed made the 21st day of April in the year 1883, between Walter B. Persons and wife of the first part, and Pompey Edwards, and Walter B. Turner, Partners in farming and the firm name of Edwards and Turner, of the second part, Witnesseth, that in consideration of Thirteen hundred dollars the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, the said Walter B. Persons and wife do grant unto the said Pompey Edwards and Walter B. Turner, a certain Tract of Land, being in the county of Southampton, State of Virginia known as a portion of Col. William a. Jones original Homestead said to contain three hundred and thirty acres more or less, with general warranty,bounded as follows on the north by the lands of Mrs. Martha M.E. Jones; on the east by the lands of J.C. Claud; on the south by the lands of Walter B. Persons, David Turner, and J.B. Prince; the west by the lands of P.S. Thomas known as the old Thomas place. Persons, the wife of Walter B. Persons whose names are signed to the writing within bearing date April 21st 1883, personally appeared before us in the county aforesaid and being examined by us privately and apart from her husband and having the writing aforesaid fully examined to her she the said Bettie N. Person acknowledged the said writing to be her act. and declared that she had willingly executed the same and does not wish to retract it. Given under our hand this the 21st day of April 1883.

Walter Turner and his stepfather , Pompey Edwards, decided to divide the land they jointly purchased in 1883 for a business venture.
1889 Southampton County, Virginia Deed Book 40,470-471 8 March 1889
This Deed made Mch 8, 1889 between Pompey Edwards and Betsey Edwards his wife and W.B. Turner and Nina Turner his wife of the other part Witnesseth; That Whereas Pompey Edwards and W.B.Turner are seized in fee simple of and have equal shares as tenants in common in a certain parcel of land lying in Southampton County and bounded by the lands of P.S. Thomas, Edward Jones, Bur Jones, Mrs. Mary E. Claud, the old Newton Place, John and Robert Reese and the land upon which J.C. Claud now lives , which was the land conveyed to the said parties by and from W.B. Person & wife, Now therefore to the end and intent that a partition may be had and made by and between the said parties of the said tract of land, they the said Pompey Edwards and W.B. Turner by their own mutual consent and agreement have and do hereby make partition of the same in manner following. The said Pompey Edwards shall have for his part and portion of the said land all that part lying North of a line beginning at a white oak, nearly in front of the dwelling house of W.B. Turner and about 250 yards from said dwelling thence said line goes nearly West and is designated by a dividing fence which is on the line to an oak ridge on the West side then through said oak ridge by a line at chopped tree nearly West to a said W.B. Turner shall have for his part and portion of said tract of land all the land South of the aforesaid described line. Th e said Edwards & Turner are to keep up the said fence equally on in case of failure of either party so to do that they must keep up separate fences. The said portions of land are respectively granted and conveyed with special warranty and are to be held in severalty by each party. Witness the following signatures & Seals

Walter B. Turner and his brother Lawrence Turner , purchase land.
Know all men that I W.J. Adams for and in consideration of Eighteen Dollars & Seventy Five cents to me in hand paid at the sealing and delivery of these minutes the receipt where of is hereby acknowledge , do grant , sell , Aliene and release & confirm unto W.B. Turner and Lawrence Turner , their heirs & assign for all that certain tract or parcel of land lying in the County of Southampton & containing by recent survey one fourth of an acre be the same forever, ever so much more or less & bounds as follows, on the East , beginning at a cedar post by the land of W.T. Adams, on the south by the line of the right of way of the Atlantic & Danville Rail Road; on the west and North by the lands of W.T. Adams and situated at Adams Grove Station on the Atlantic & Danville and on the north side of said By and in the shape of a regular square Together with all the appurtenance to the said land belonging on in and wise appertaining . To have & to hold the said tract or parcel of land with its appurtenance aforesaid unto the said W.B. Turner x Lawrence Turner their heirs assigns forever. And the said W.T. Adams son himself & his heirs doth covenant & agree with the Said W.B. & Lawrence Turner their heirs and assigns in manner and form following to wit. That the said W.T. Adams is seizer in fee simple of the said tract or parcel of
land with its appurtenances above & that he has good right and law title to convey the same . That the said W.B. & Lawrence Turner & their heirs and assigns shall have quiet, peaceable possession of the said land & its appurtenances aforesaid forever That the said tract or parcel of land with its appurtenances aforesaid is free from all encumbrances & charges whatsoever. And that the said W.T. Adams will execute such further assurances of Fan the said land, & its appurtenances as may be requisite to make the title therefor of the W.B.& Lawrence Turner their heirs & assigns , sure and complete forever.

Walter and Nina enter into an indenture with Lewis Turner.
This indenture made this the 17th day of February 1892, between Walter B. Turner and Nina Turner his wife, party of the first part and Lewis Turner party of the second part Witnesseth : That the said parties of the first part do hereby bargain , sell, release, aliens, and confirm with general warranty unto Lewis Turner of the county of Southampton heirs and assigns forever all that certain tract or portion of land lying in the County of Southampton and ?ing by estimation Thirty acres be the same however more or less and bounded as follows, to wit: On the East by County Road leading from Person's Mill Pond to Danville and commencing at a certain Pine Tree on said thence west along a line of chopped trees to a sweet gum from thence along a line of chopped trees to the swamp Thence up the sum of said swamp to a sweet gum along a line of chopped trees to a maple. Thence up branch to the land of Mary E. Claud,Thence by lands of Mary E. Claude, Ephraim Royall and a John and Robert Reese to the aforesaid county Road. Thence up the said Road to the pine tree at the beginning For and in consideration of one Hundred Dollars receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged. And the said parties of the first part especially and by these presents explisitly reserve for their own use a certain fence upon the aforesaid Thirty acres of land for the period of Fifteen months & should the said grantors fail to remove said fence from the aforesaid tract of land within The period prescribed, then it is to be the property absolute of the said grantee. Witness the signature and seals of the said contracting parties this the 17th day of February 1892.

Know all men by the presents, that I Britton Turner of State of Virginia in the County of Southampton, party of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of thirty five dollars lawful money of the United States of America to me in hand paid at the sealing and delivery of these present by W.B. Turner of the State of Virginia party of the second part. The receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted , bargained , Sold and delivered, and by the presents, do grant , bargained , sell and deliver unto the said part of the second part all the following property: to wit: one mule at thirty five dollars by the name of Bell to have and to hold said property unto the said party of the second part his heirs executors, administrators and assign to and for their own property in and behalf for ever and the said party of the first part does vow himself to be the true and lawful owner of the said property or have in himself full power, good right and lawful authority dispose of the said property in manner as aforesaid and does for himself and his heirs executors and administrations named and agree to and with the said party of the second part to warrant and defend the said property to the said party of second part his executors administrators and assigns against the lawful claim and demands of all and every person and persons whom so ever . Walter owned his farm and had not been unemployed for the year. Nina, his wife , had had at least 5 children but only 4 were living.

Betsy Edwards was the mother of Walter Turner. Neither Betsy nor Pompey her husband could read or write. Pompey was a farmer who was not unemployed for the year. He owned his farm.

Where as by a certain deed of trust executed on the 11th day of March 1889 and duly recorded in the Clerk's Office of Southampton County, Pompey Edwards in order to secure certain in debtness therein specified , did convey in trust to James R. Joyner , trustee that certain tract of land and appurtenances situate in said county of Southampton And bounded as follows : Commencing at a white oak nearly in from To the dwelling house of W.B. Turner and about 250 yards from said dwelling house thence in a line nearly West designated by a dividing fence, which is on the line to an oak ridge on the west side through said oak ridge by a line of chopped trees nearly, west to a white oak in Ben Jones line said tract of hand containing 169 acres more or less and being the land which said Pompey Edwards took for his part in the division of the tract of land bought by him and W.B. Turner from W.B. Person and wife and where as by an order of the District Court of said county entered at the May term 1906, W.J. Sebrell was duly substituted as trustee in the place and head of the said James R. Joyner , Trustee who had therefore departed this life and Where as default having been made in the payment of the debt secure by the said deed of trust as aforesaid at the request of the beneficiary therein named did expose the said real estate to sale by publix auction at Drewryville , Va. on the 20th day of September 1906 after having given due notice of the time place and terms of sale as required by the said deed of trust at which said sale W.B. Turner became the purchaser thereof in the sum of ($885.00) Eight hundred and eighty five dollars that being the highest bid and where as the said W.B. Turner has fully paid the said purchase price of $885.00 and therefore , entitled to a deed for the said real estate conveyed in said deed of trust Now therefore this deed made this 6th day of October premier and of the said sum of $885.00 the receipt where of is hereby acknowledged the said W.J. Sebrell substituted trust in The said deed of trust as aforesaid doth grant and convey with special warranty unto the said W.B. Turner and his heirs forever , the said real estate herein before mentioned and described the Same being The identical real estate conveyed in The said deed of trust recorded in the Clerk's Office of said county in Trust Deed Book, No 1 page 585 reference To which is hereby especially made for a more particular description of the said real estate- witness the following signatures and seal.
