Maternal Grandparents: Before 1951.My grandmother attended Franklin (Virginia) Normal and Industrial Institute founded by Della Irvin Hayden in 1904. The school was the first high school for rural black children in southeastern Virginia. Mama Lizzie resided in the girls' dormitory and completed her high school education. She later attended St Pauls College in Lawrenceville, Virginia and taught school in a one room building for a brief time before she married my grandfather on January 25,1920.
