Paternal Grandmother: 1958. Mama Virgie was the daughter of former slave James Thompson Claud and Susanna Turner. James Thompson Claud purchased 194 acres of land in Southampton , County for $400.00 14 March,1903. The land was divided into 3 tracts: 48 acres, 71 acres and 75 acres and was joined by the lands of Milly (Bozeman) Turner, Susana's mother, who is believed to be a Nottoway Indian. The James Thompson Claud Family was enumerated as Mulattoes in the 1900,1910 and 1920 Southampton County Census.
