The Hardys and McMahons in the Old Countries

Updated November 9, 2000

About Our Family Research

HARDY: My paternal grandfather, Alfred Spence Hardy, was a first cousin to famed English auther/poet Thomas Hardy; Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy, Flag Captain to Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar, is also in my ancestry. I have much of the family ancestry in Dorset back to the early 1600s, but there are important gaps to be filled in. Also, possible Huegenot origins in France..
McMAHON: My maternal greatgrandfather, William McMahon, was born in Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, in 1827, the son of James McMahon, also born in Fermanagh in 1805. William emigrated either to New York or Montreal as a child, presumably with his parents, but returned to be educated in Ireland. He later emigrated to Canada [year not known], and settled in Kinmount, Ontario, with many of his relatives. He married Mary Browne, born in 1827. William and Mary moved on to Kinley, Saskatchewan in the early 1900s with some of their children and other family members. They were homesteaders, and lived in sod houses while breaking the virgin prairie. Mary died in Kinley in 1909, and Willian died in 1911. I have detailed information about the McMahons from 1900 to the present, but wish to fill-in gaps during the 1800s, and track the family from James McMahon back
