Davis and took from them a loving wife and mother. Aunt Martha, as she was commonly called by the younger generation had been in poor health for a number of years and on Feb. 3, 1926 she fell and from then she gradually grew worse and died the following month. She was the daughter of Cornelius and Sarah Smock, born in Hardin County 1 Dec 1860, departed from life March 3, 1926, being 65 years, 3 month and two days of age at the time of her death. She was united in marriage with W.L. Davis Nov. 11, 1879. Four children blessed this union, two girls Nora and Lizze, who preceded their mother to the Great Beyond some 28 years ago and two boys, T.A. and Edgar, also a grand son, C.D. Adams, who had been with them from infancy and was just as dear to her as her own. She possessed a kind, loving and motherly disposition and to know her was to love her. Her home was always a welcome place for the young people, she always met us with that loving smile that we shall never forget. She was ever ready to lend a helping hand or speak something kind to those in need. The later part of her life was devoted to the rearing of her boys to bring them up to be highly respected gentleman and to educate them, which she accomplished and was always proud to speak of. Aunt Martha's health never permitted her to attend church services and visit her neighbors as she would have liked but her talk and thoughts were for the bettering of every one. She always said she could live for her Savior and Master as well in her home as elsewhere. All that medical aid and loving hands could do was done to save her but the Master said "well done". A very touching funeral service was conducted by M.F. Oxford March 5, 1926 at the Hale cemetery, after which all that was mortal of this dear, good woman was consigned to its last resting place beside her daughter Nora, wife of Allen Adams. I would say to Mr. Davis and the sons weep not as those who have no hope; your loving companion and dear mother is not dead but sleeping. So live that when the summons comes to join them there will be an unbroken family in the skies. Written by one who lived her--Georgia M. He was born July 1st, 1845 at Cave-in-Rock, Illinois, and at the age of eighteen enlisted in the Union Army serving until the end of the Civil War, when with an honorable dicharge he returned to his home at Cave-in-Rock and farming. He was united in marriage with Mary Julia LACKEY February 15, 1865. The union was blessed with six children, of whom two survive, Mrs. Elizabeth HESS and Mrs. Lelia GUSTIN. He professed faith in Christ in 1890, becoming a member of the General Baptist Church at Tower Rock, Illinois, to which he lived faithfully. The greater part of his life was spent in farming in which he became prominent, leaving the farm on account of poor health about three years ago, moving to Cave-in-Rock, where he entered into rest February 10th, 1927, at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 9 days. How beautiful it is to be old, And to sit near the sunset gate, Ready to enter the portals. But willing with patience to wait Knowing that safety garnered Are all the sheaves of the years- That ahead are the glad reunion And behind all the sorrows and tears Not dead, but only promoted, He has entered the home above And there beneath the smile of the Master, He will finish his labors of Love. Frailey. On October 2, 1897 she was married to Edward Hess, to which union was born two children, Richard and Mrs. Cecil Smith, both of whom survive her. Her children were yet quite young when Mrs Hess was left a widow. Assuming the responsibilities of father and mother, she went right on working untiring to supply both the physical and spiritual needs of her family. We talk much of war heroes, of wise statemen and of brave reformers--this is as it should be; but let us not leave unsung the merits of a faithfaul, God-fearing mother, who, rears her children to maturity, having prepared them to take their place in the world as noble men and women. Mrs. Hess early in life professed faith in Christ and became a member of the General Baptist Church at Tower Rock; and while she attended and participated in services of other churches, she retained her membership where it had been placed at the time of her conversion. Mrs. Hess has not been well for some time; and on May 7th. she underwent an operation for cancer of the stomach at the Evansville Hospital. Shortly afterwards she was brought back and taken to her mother's home in Cave-in-Rock and for fourteen weeks she was tenderly cared for and watched over by those whom she loved best. Daily friends called to see her, neighbors of hers when she lived in the country, finding her ever patient and cheerful and happy to see them. People marvelled at her fortitude; and yet the heart that trust in Christ as their refugee will find their strength ever renewed. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Willie E. Dutton at the Baptist church in Cave-in-Rock and Interment made in the IOOF cemetery by her husband. The large attendance at the church and cemetery and beautiful floral offerings, testify of the high esteem with which she was regarded. His funeral was conducted by Rev. Wigham at Cave-in-Rock Baptist church, on the day following his death, after which his remains were taken to Cave Hill Cemetery for burial. He passed from life into death at the prime of manhood being at the time 46 years 2 months and 3 days. His fatal illness was brought on several years ago by his association with mines. At this time Mr. Hess was superintendent of the mines and on several occasions, he was compelled to go down into the mines from which he inhaled poisonous gases that in time caused his death. Mr. Hess came to Hardin County in 1883 and located at Cave-in-Rock. In 1893 he was united in marriage to Miss Lizzie Frailey, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Frailey, to whom he was a devoted companion until death called him. To this union was born two children, a son and a daughter who with their mother are left to mourn his departure. Mr. Hess lived on the Baldwin farm for eleven years. When his health began to fail he gave up farming and moved to Fairfield, Ill., but as his health did not improve he came back to Hardin County and built him a model home on land given his wife by her parents. Work was the great main-spring of his life. It was his chief inspiration. He was very concerned for his family's comfort. On this theory he accumulated enough for the sustenance of his family after he was taken from them. Mr. Hess was a good citizen, a good neighbor, honest and trust- worthy in all his dealings with fellowman. He told his family that he was ready and willing to meet death when the summons came. He left a message of hope in his inspiring face to those who were dear. During his last sickness which was quite long seige, every wish of his was granted. His wife and children never tired of trying to alleviate some of his pain. The attention he received no doubt prolonged his life to a great extent. Our sympathy is extended to the bereaved companion, children, brother, sisters and other friends and relatives. Written by H.M.R. March the 9th. 1847 and died in the German Hospital, St. Louis, MO. August 6th. 1914, hence he was at the time of his death 67 years 4 months and 27 days old. In company with his Uncle John Leonberger family he crossed the ocean to this country when he was about 10 yrs old and settled in the southern part of Gallatin Co. IL. On coming to manhood this industrious young German pioneer sought and obtained the hand of Miss Lizzie Denton in marriage and pitched their home in the dense and apparentely nonyielding forest on the ridge known as Beaver Hill. Gradually the worth- less giants of oak and poplar gave away before the sturdy stroke of indefatigable labor and a fine farm of grain, clover and grass took its place. Six children were reared to man and womanhood who with their bereaved mother mourn the great loss they have sustained namely: Charles, who lives on the old home place, Sarah (now Mrs. William Denton of Shawneetown) Wiley, who lives on Ford's Road, Ollie (now Mrs. Sylvester Love) of Sparks Hill, George who lives on Fords Road and Clarence unmarried, living with his parents. There were also three or four children who died in infancy. Some twelve years ago he purchased a farm on Fords Road south of Equality and four or five years later made a purchase of adjoining land to the land in Hardin County although this was in Gallatin Co. This farm was improved and brought up to high standards of cultivation and productivity until it became one of the finest farms in the county, except the dwelling which was of the old style of houses. So Uncle Fred began the building of a beautiful modern dwelling this spring and had just about completed it when seized with his final illness; perhaps the additional care and labor caused by this building augmented the ailment that lead to his demise. Always taking a great delight as a teamster, he did the principal part of hauling of the building material and complained of a hurting in his side and that the jar of the wagon aggravated the symptons but he as usual persevered even against the advice of companion, children and friends, thinking that he would be able to overcome it after the hard part of the work was finished. He was obliged to take his bed with an irritated and swollen liver and with other complications that stubbornly refused to obey medical rules and remedies. Finally it was decided to remove him to the aid of a hospital for the advise of surgeons, but when he arrived in St Louis it was seen that he was too weak for the ordeal, and he soon gave over the struggle of this life. His tragic death brings to mind the saying of Dr Oliver Wendel Holmes a thought that every man and woman of middle age would do well to hang on the wall of his memory. Said he " Most people who reach their 50th milestone looses their lives from a failure to recognize old age when he comes" Old age must be protected by the cloaks of care and caution. If exposed to the same forces of labor, exertion, weather etc. as younger man he is very liable to lose his life. As to the usefulness of the life and sterling qualities of character of this pioneer citizen. I'm sorry space will not admit what ought to be written. He was one of the few men who knew how to accumulate wealth and friendship at the same time. I feel that he must have loaned more money without note or interest than any other man I ever knew who reached out a philanthrophic hand to a forgetful public. He was so generous and noble that the nobleness in other men tho sometimes apparently, sleeping rose in majesty to meet his own (paper torn) For Brother Leonberger was a consistent christian able in prayer, fervent in instruction, a deacon in Yellow Spring Church in Hardin County where he was loved and revered by both communicants and non- communicants as a patriarch of God. He was also a man who recognized the making of good institutions as important as the making of money and the school educational systems, singing schools, district and township improvements etc. received his immediate attention and support. The mortal remains was brought to the family cemetery on the old Home Farm where a large crowd of appreciative relatives and friends met to pay their sincere regards and offer words of condolence and comfort to the bereaved. Here Judge E. N. Hall of Elizabethtown delivered the funeral address from Solomons word "He that soweth righteousness hath a sure reward" After paying tribute of respect to his life which in connection with his dear companion had been a constant blessing to his family, friends and community. The speaker argued and exhorted the younger of his congregation exemplify his virtues and emulate his traits of character as the surest passports to both temporal and eternal rewards. He ceased by renewing the assurance of immortality and of heavenly recognition and with these let us be comforted. The Hand of Providence that first gave life to this revered pioneer father is able to continue that speak thru deaths cold valley. That we shall live beyond the grave is no great mystery than that we are living now. Written by E. N. Due to an attack of measles and pneumonia, when he was a very small child, Mitchell had suffered the handicap of faulty vision most of hids brief life. Fortuantely, his parents were able to give him the privilege of attending the Cook school, a special school for hadicapped children in Detroit. By his own efforts he had became a member of the 5th grade A class taught in that school. With the additional care of a skillful physician his eyesight had been for the past two years, rapidly improving. Having the natural instincts of all boys, he had all of his life wished to be able to join in sports with other lads of his age. Due to his improvement he had recently come to feel that his goal had been attained and that at last he could be a "real boy" with his companions. He had already became a Jr. Boy Scout and was fulfilling the obligations of his organization to the best of his ability. But the Savior who said "Suffer little children to come unto me" had need for this lad, and after a sudden and brief illness of two days, Mitchell's spirit took its flight to a much safer and better world. The Daily Register, Harrisburg, Illinois http://www.dailyregister.com/ Obituary of Rev John THORNTON, Hardin County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 1999 Wanda Reed Name of Deceased: Rev. John THORNTON Name of Newspaper: Hardin County Independent Date of Newspaper: 15 June 1911 Rev. John Thornton, a brief sketch of whose life I here attempt to give, was born in Morgan County, Tennessee, August 11, 1839 and died at his home in Elizabethtown, Illinois June 7, 1911, after an illness of several months, at the somewhat advanced age of 71, years, 9 months and 26 days. Embraced within the parenthesis of these dates was a life of earnest endeavor and unsullied honor, of high integrity and uprightness as a citizen of unestimable worth and usefulness as a minister of the Gospel to his community and to the county, and who has been crowned with a large measure of appreciation by an extensive acquaintence. He was born of poor parentage and came to this county when but two years old and grew to manhood as the average poor boy of that early day did, without any of the educational and social advantages enjoyed by the boys of today, and knew well what it was to be hampered by the hard lines of poverty At the age of twenty years he wooed and won the hand and heart of Miss Mary Ann Ledbetter, and their marriage was consummated June 2, 1859. To this union 10 children were born - namely: Rebecca, wife of Richard Birch, of this place; Doctor E., of Abeline, Texas; Martha, wife of W. D. Aaron of Peters Creek; Sidney, wife of G. W. Patrick, of Redland, Calif.; John A. of Cave-in-Rock; Willie C., deceased; Ida, wife of Clarence Shearer, of St. Petersburg, FL; Phoebe, deceased; Lou, (deceased) wife of Bryant Mason of Cave-in-Rock and Henry of Peters Creek. At an early age deceased began life for himself with no resources except a strong mind, good health, an indomitable will and a firm conviction that without honesty no other excellence, religious or otherwise, is worth anything. The battle of life with him was not an easy one. The prospect at the beginning was not bright, but his courageous soul knew no such word as fail. To succeed he had to grapple with and overcome many obstacles, not the least of which was extreme poverty. This he did, and not withstanding the fact that he contributed to the cause of Christianity more gratuitous, time and money than any other Hardin County man, living or died, and raised a large family in a respectable manner, he still had and left an ample living for his widow which will eventually go to the children. His aged widow deserves her full share of praise for their success in life for she was indeed and in truth a helpmate. The deceased professed faith in Christ in August 1860, and joined the Christian Church and remained a member of that congregation until 1868, when he united with the General Baptist Church at Rock Creek, and was ordained to the full work of the ministry by the presbytery of the Ohio Association Oct. 11, 1871, and for more than a quarter of a century no member of that Association rendered more faithful and efficient service for that denomination than he, often pastoring three churches at a time, some of them far from home, often necessitating great exposure to inclement weather to reach them. He believed that the foremost force in the progress and civilization of the world is the Christian religion, and that morality and the uplift of society is due to the dominance of Christian sentiment, and of standards of judgement created by it. He was a man of profound reverence, of unfaltering faith in God and implicit trust in His divine promises, and a firm believer in the immortality of the soul. And his daily life was ever consistent with and continuously emphasized his religious faith. No blot nor blur stained his manhood. Purity of life, rectitude of conduct, rigid integrity unstinted devotion to principle adorned his long and illustrious career. Verily, he has left behind him a good name and a record without blemish. Knowing him as I did and prepared as I am to speak truly of him, I wish to record of him what, after all, is the highest possible tribute, the grandest epitaph that can mark the last resting place of any of our race, the very best that friend living can say of friend dead. He was an honest and truthful man. A brief but impressive funeral service was held at the residence, conducted by the Brother Powis, the M. E. pastor, before the corpse was taken to Peters Creek where it found a last resting place. After a touching and fervent prayer by the M.E. pastor, and while the church bell tolled the crowd at the residence lined up on the front porch and sang "Nearer My God to Thee" as the casket containing the remains of our deceased friend and brother went out never more to return. It was indeed a sad and solemn scene. The corpse was taken to Peters Creek where the funeral proper was had, conducted by Revs. Joseph Stone and Jonas Spivey, who used as text the 37th verse of the 37th. Psalm. "Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright; for the end of that man is at peace." They paid a glowing tribute to the deceased as exemplified in all walks of life, and after others who desired to, had been permitted to speak a word of praise of the deceased, surrounded by those who loved him and whom he loved, all that was mortal of this good man was consigned to its last resting place amid the sobs of relatives and sympathizing friends. Chicago Tribune featured obit for Mary Schoeny MARY RUTH SCHOENY, 75 August 27, 2003 Mary Ruth Schoeny, 75, of Montgomery, whose lifelong interest in children led her to earn a certificate in early childhood education in her late 40s, died Sunday, Aug. 24, in her home. Born in Shawneetown, Ill., Mrs. Schoeny married Lawrence W. Schoeny in 1950, and soon after the couple began raising a family. The day before her husband's funeral in 1999, she suffered a massive stroke, which left her hospitalized for nearly four months. Despite the seriousness of her condition, she returned home and continued to visit with family and friends regularly. Relatives said that Mrs. Schoeny had a wonderful way with young children, an interest that stemmed from her many jobs as a baby-sitter when she was young. She cared for several children in her home after her own children were grown. Although she left school at age 14 to work and help support her family, Mrs. Schoeny earned a high school equivalency diploma when she was in her early 40s. Several years later she received a certificate in early childhood education from Waubonsee Community College while working as a day-care provider in her home. She also worked at Kmart in Montgomery for five years. Mrs. Schoeny also volunteered her time with many church-sponsored charitable groups and causes. Survivors include two sons, Paul and Eric; two daughters, Lanora Mueller and Betty Lacey; a brother, Samuel Mull; and 10 grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Dieterle Memorial Home, 1120 Broadway St., Montgomery. Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Anne's Catholic Church, 551 Boulder Hill Pass, Oswego.
