He married HANNAH ANN EVANS 28 Jun 1804 in Eardisland Parish Church, Herefordshire, England, daughter of JOHN EVANS and MARY JONES. Notes for J
AMES HARGEST:
James Hargest most likely attended school in a village known as Woebley in Herefordshire, England. The school building still exists and is currently being used as a private residence.

James Hargest may have come to Baltimore in 1804 as an indentured servant. In this manner, his voyage and and the acquisition of land were exchanged for working on land over a period of time - usually about four years. Written family records documenting this information were within the family and were destroyed before 2002.

1810 Census Baltimore County Patapsco Lower Hundred p. 473 James Hargest is listed with Thomas Lewis and James Edwards. Thomas Lewis witnessed James Hargest's naturalization in 1814 and most likely was from Hereforshire England. Also, James Edwards and his wife came to Baltimore from Herefordshire England between 1805-1810. They had two daughters who sold their land in to the Hargest Family in 1828.

Death Notice - Baltimore American

On Tuesday morning 7th (March) at 8 o'clock at his late residence rear of Green Mount Cemetery, James Hargest, gardner, in the 76th year of age. His friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, without further notice, this wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock.

James was first buried in the North section of the Northern Burial Ground (Row No. 24 Lot No. 11), Asquith Street and Boundary Avenue, of North Baltimore Station ME Church. (Also, known as the Old Cathedral Burial Ground.) The burial ground was dismantled in 1878 after the area was condemned by the city to build North Avenue. By court order, lot holders had four week to move the remains. (Morning Herald newspaper, April 10, 1878) George Washington Hargest moved his grandparents, James and Hannah Hargest, to his lot in Greenmount Cemetery.

In 2005, a Hargest Baltimore Album Quilt was auctioned for $36,000. This quilt was completed in 1845 and has 49 people listed including the nine children of James and Hannah Hargest. The center indicates that the quilt was made in honor of James and Hannah Hargest. A ninth child, Ann M. Hargest, is listed between William Evans Hargest and Thomas Hargest. In June 2005, the quilt was purchased by the International Quilt Study Center at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska.

OBITUARY

"When death, the King of terrors, summons the aged from among us, we consider it as corn fully ripe for the harvest; but the tear of affection falls on the paper of the writer of this last tribute of respect to departed worth, when he has to mention the death of JAMES HARGAS, in the 20th year of his age, who was greatly ennobled by his virtuous deeds. The tears of affectionate parents and mourning friends will, like pleading innocense, embalm the flowery turf which shrouds his inanimate farm. Could the attention of kind parents, or the affection of affectionate friends have preserved thee, you wouldst not died. Farewell ! fond youth farewell ! may it be our happy lot to meet thee in the mansions above."
