Descendants of Thomas Eubanks

Generation No. 2

2. ELIJAH T.2 EUBANKS (THOMAS1) was born October 17, 1805 in prob. Onslow County, North Caolina, and died July 15, 1883 in Crawford County, Georgia. He married MARTHA N. DICKSON August 10, 1826 in Crawford County, Georgia, daughter of BENJAMIN DICKSON and MARY TAYLOR. She was born January 07, 1809 in Hancock County, Georgia, and died May 09, 1888 in Sandy Pt., Crawford County, Georgia.

Notes for E
LIJAH T. EUBANKS:

Elijah was the son of Thomas Eubanks (b. 1776 in NC, d. Dec 1, 1818 in Hancock County, Georgia) and Nancy Dickson who may have been a granddaughter of Josiah Dickson. Josiah was Michael Dickson, Sr.'s brother.

Elijah had the following sisters and brothers: Priscilla; Thomas; James D.; Caroline T.; Lucretia; Nancy Thomas; Louisa B. and Eliza L. Eubanks.

Elijah Eubanks and Martha N. Dickson were married on August 10, 1826 in Crawford County, Georgia by Bryan Lane, Justice of the Peace.

Information on Elijah Eubanks and his wife and children came from the 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860 and 1880 Crawford County, Georgia censuses; Elijah Eubanks Bible record pages supplied to me by Harvey Eubanks of Provo, Utah; Crawford County Wills Book "B." and from other family researchers.

The 1830 Crawford County census shows Elijah Eubanks with one female child under the age of five (this would be Nancy) which is consistent with my records, and places Elijah and his young family in that county by 1830. Evidently he was farming and had one slave. Elijah's property was on land Lot 42 on the north side of old Wire Road at the junction of Girl Scout Road which passes in front of Camp Martha Johnson. (Information concerning the land lot came from Terre Moody Walker.)

The 1850 Crawford County census gives the following statistics:
Elijah Eubanks age 44, planter Read Est. valued at $1200
      Martha Eubanks age 41
      Nancy Eubanks age 19
      Sarah Eubanks age 16
      Lucinda Eubanks age 13
      Ann Eubanks age 10
      Susan Eubanks age 3
Not listed on the 1850 census was daughter Mary Ann Eubanks who had married in 1849 to Samuel Thomason and William Kinchen Eubanks who was not born until 1851.

The 1880 Crawford County census shows Elijah, age 74 and Martha, age 71, sharing their home with their daughter Susan, known as "Sudie", age 36. Sudie later married Wes Stembridge but had no children.

In his will, Elijah names the following children: Susan May Eubanks, Mary Ann Thomaston, Nancy Moody, Lucinda Wilder, Ann Long and William Kinchen Eubanks. His wife Martha Eubanks received all his real and personal property of which she could dispose only the personal property. At Martha's death the real property was to be divided equally among his heirs, except for 100 acres which was the east half of Lot No. 43, 3rd Dist. of Crawford County which had originally been Houston County.

In addition to the children of Elijah Eubanks and Martha Dickson, the names of four slaves are listed. They were: Rosey, born 1837; Daniel, born 1847; Jane, born August 8, 1853; and Henry, born November 7, 1857.

HISTORY OF ROBERTA AND CRAWFORD COUNTY, GEORGIA by Emmie Carnes Bankston, 1976, pp 78-87, lists the members of Dixon (Dickson) Church which was established about 1824. Among the members listed are Elijah Eubanks and Martha Eubanks (who was Martha Dickson.) Their daughter Martha Ann Thomaston, wife of Samuel Thomaston, was also a member. (Martha Ann Elizabeth Thomas(t)on, called Bettie, married James Madison Hancock. They were my great grandparents.)

Also listed on the same page was William W. Stembridge, born December 16, 1852.

Elijah Eubanks and his wife Martha N. Dickson Eubanks are buried at Dickson Methodist Church. Their graves are directly behind the church building. Elijah's gravestone has the following: Elijah Eubanks, born Oct. 17, 1805, died July 15, 1883. "Remember my friends as you pass by, That all mankind are born to die, Then let your cares on Christ breast (rest?), That you may dwell with him at last."

Martha's gravestone reads: Martha N. Eubanks wife of Elijah, born Jan 7, 1809, died May 9, 1888. "Lord she was Thine and not mine own, Thou hast not done me wrong. Thank Thee for the precious loan, Afforded me so long."

There were also Bryants, Sawyers, Hatchers, Harrells, Stembridges and Reynoldses among the membership of Dickson Church. Laban L. Bryant, brother of my great grandmother, Nancy Bryant Harrell Greene, was a member.

Through genealogy sources on the internet, I have found Harvard F. Eubanks in Provo, Utah who is also descended from Elijah Eubanks. Harvey sent me copies of the record pages from Elijah Eubanks's Bible which is in Harvey's possession. From these pages I have been able to check and correct statistics in my Family Tree Maker program. 11/18/1998 JRH

(May 1999 - Jim and I visited Harvey and Lila in Provo, Utah while on a trip west.)

Notes for SUSAN MAY "SUDIE" EUBANKS:
Susan "Sudie" May Eubanks was still in the home of her parents on the 1880 Crawford County census. (see notes for Elijah Eubanks.) Sudie and her husband W. Wesley Stembridge had no children.

I found a picture of Wes Stembridge and his wife "Great Aunt Sudie sister of Aunt Missy", among a batch of pictures which belonged to my grandmother, Pearl Hancock Greene. Mama Pearl's mother, Betty Thomason Hancock, was the daughter of Samuel B. Thomason and Mary Ann Eubanks, Sudie's sister. If "Aunt Missy" refers to Mary Ann, then she would have been my grandmother's grandmother not her aunt. So someone else must have written the names on the picture.

7. vii.   WILLIAM KINCHEN EUBANKS, b. March 01, 1851, Crawford County, Georgia; d. May 30, 1937, Ft. Valley, Georgia, Peach County.
