Descendants of Clement Hancock, Sr.

Generation No. 2

2. JOSEPH2 HANCOCK (CLEMENT1) was born Bef. 1778 in Prob. North Carolina, and died Abt. 1840 in Wilkinson County, Georgia. He married MARY BRADY November 25, 1800 in Warren County, Georgia.

Notes for J
OSEPH HANCOCK:
Statistics for Joseph Hancock come from Volume 6 of World Family Tree, Tree # 2997 submitted by a Hancock relative also from the book THE GEORGIANS by Jeannette Holland Austin, 1984, pages 149-150, and from Wilkes County, Georgia Tax Lists. I have listed the names of the children of Joseph and Mary just as Austin lists them. Joseph Hancock's LW&T is dated 1840, Wilkinson County, Georgia and Austin states that it names wife and children, so I am assuming that is where she got the names of the children. Since they were all in Wilkinson County, hopefully they are not confused with any of the Crawford County Hancocks. However, I have found numerous errors in Austin's Hancock material, so I make no claims as to the accuracy of names and dates on Joseph's family page. jrh

Joseph Hancock was the son of Clement Hancock, Sr. and Mary Renfroe Hancock. Mary was the daughter of Enoch Renfroe whose wife is thought to have been Rachel Rushing. Enoch Renfroe signed his Last Will and Testament in 1802 which was probated in Wilkes County, Georgia.

The families of Joseph Hancock and Mary Brady lived near each other in Wilkes/Warren County, Georgia. The 1805 Warren County tax report shows Joseph's father, Clem(ent) Hancock paying tax on land on Joe's Creek. Next on the list is William Hancock, probably Clement's son. Three names below William is his brother Joseph Hancock paying tax on land on Joe's Creek which was granted to Hatcher &c. In the same tax district, Captain Devereaux's, was Lewis Braddy paying tax on land on the Ogeechee. Also paying tax on land on Joe's Creek which was granted to Hatcher, is Samuel Braddy in Capt. J.B. Flournoy's district. Before that, in 1794, Clem Hancock was also on Joe's Creek adjoining land that belonged to Braddy. It is believed, but not documented, that Joseph Hancock married Mary Brady, the daughter of Samuel Brady. The Hancock and the Brady families show up in Wilkinson County, Georgia shortly after 1800.

The 1820 Wilkinson County, Georgia census records the following:
Joseph Hancock: 4 males to 10 (Edmund, Willis, John, James); 1 male 10 to 16 (William); 1 male 26 to 45 (father Joseph). 2 females to 10 (unknown); 2 females 10 to 16 (1 was Elizabeth, other unknown); 1 female 26 to 45 (mother Mary)

NOTE: I have since found an abstract of the will of Joseph Hancock in WILKINSON COUNTY WILLS, 1817-1926, by Joseph T. Maddox, 1971, pp 112-113. It is quoted below:

WILL OF JOSEPH HANCOCK - GEORGIA, WILKINSON COUNTY

I, Joseph Hancock, of the County and State aforesaid, being of sound mind and memory, but sick in body and knowing the uncertainty of death, make this my last will and testament.
FIRST. I give my soul to God who gave it, and my body to its mother dust to be decently buried.
ITEM 2. It is my request that my just debts be paid.
ITEM 3. That my beloved wife, Mary Hancock, should have the balance of my property, both real and personal, after the payment of my just debts as before mentioned during her natural lifetime or widowhood.
ITEM 4. It is my request that my sons: William Hancock, James Hancock, Edmund Hancock, Willis Hancock and John Hancock be and they are hereby appointed to contract and wind up my affairs and that my sons Willis, Edmund, John and daughter Elizar have the privilege to remain on my plantation, keep the property together and support their mother.
ITEM 5. It is my request that after the death or marriage of my said wife, Mary, that then and all my property, both real and personal be equally divided among my children.
ITEM 6. I wish that James Hatcher shall give my sons advice and instructions in relations to the manner of managing my property. This 8th day of ______, 1840, made in the presence of us.
                        Joseph Hancock."

The month was omitted as were the names of the witnesses. There was no mention of a daughter named Evaline in the will, but perhaps she died before the will was written. Nor was there any mention of Elizabeth Ann, so perhaps the Elizar mentioned in the will of Joseph Hancock was the name by which Elizabeth Ann was called. There must have been other daughters as is indicated in the 1820 census. These daughters were either deceased or married before the will was written, the married daughters probably receiving their inheritance/dowry at the time of their marriages. jrh

NOTE: The James Hatcher mentioned in Joseph's will was probably the son of Major John Hatcher. This James Hatcher died in 1842.

Joseph Hancock is one of the names listed in "Beall and Patterson's Store" book as having traded there in 1825.

NOTE: See the "More About" notes for Clement Hancock, Sr. for the Wilkes County, Georgia connection of the Hancock/Renfroe/Hatcher/Brady families as revealed on the 1794 and 1805 tax lists. jrh

Notes for M
ARY BRADY:
Joe Maddox notes in his WILKINSON COUNTY GEORGIA HERITAGE COLLECTIONS, pages 37 and 38, that Mary Hancock, nee Brady, was the wife of Joseph Hancock. It is assumed by Hatcher and Hancock family researchers that Mary Brady Hancock was a niece of Mary Brady Hatcher, probably the daughter of Samuel Brady believed to be Mary Hatcher's brother.

Samuel Brady is listed on the 1820 Wilkinson County, Georgia census as follows: 1 male 16 to 20; 1 male 45 & up. 1 female 26 to 45; 1 female 45 & up. Since Mary Brady and Joseph Hancock were married in 1800, probably in Warren County, Georgia, Mary would, of course, not be in her father's household in 1820.

Mary Brady Hancock became a member of Liberty Baptist Church. (Maddox, p. 49) jrh

3. WILLIAM2 HANCOCK (CLEMENT1) was born June 1779 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, and died June 1852 in Crawford County, Georgia. He married NANCY HATCHER March 20, 1805 in Warrington, Warren County, Georgia, daughter of JOHN HATCHER and MARY BRADY. She was born November 04, 1782 in South Carolina, and died Abt. 1877 in Crawford County, Georgia.

Notes for W
ILLIAM HANCOCK:
William Hancock's LWT dated December 25, 1851, proved July 6, 1852, in Crawford County, Georgia. Son William Green Hancock was the executor of the will which was signed by William on 25 December 1851. The will names only William's wife, Nancy, and son, Robert. The will was witnessed by John Jones, Willie(s) B. Scott and Cicero Hatcher. (I wonder if William and Nancy named their son Robert for his grandfather Robert Hatcher???jrh)

NOTE: See the "More About" notes for Clement Hancock, Sr. for the Wilkes County connection of the Hancock/Renfroe/Hatcher/Brady families on the 1794 and 1805 tax lists. jrh

NOTE: From information sent me on 10/13/1998 by Patti Gettinger, I have added several children to William Hancock's family page and added some statistics. Evidently there were three other children born between 1810 and 1815 who died in infancy, since there are no statistics for them. Patti descends from William Hancock and Nancy Hatcher and has done extensive research on the family. JRH

The 1820 Wilkinson County, Georgia census records the following:
William Hancock: 1 male to 10; 1 male 10 to 16; 1 male 26 to 45. 2 females to 10; 2 females 10 to 16; 1 female 26 to 45. The 1 male to 10 would have been William Green; the 1 male 10 to 16 would have been Jeremiah. The 2 females to 10 would have been Rachel and Elizabeth; the 2 females 10 to 16 would have been Mary and Nancy; and the two older people would have been William and his wife Nancy.

William Hancock, John Hancock, Clement Hancock, Jr. and Enoch Hancock, all sons of Clement Hancock, Sr. left Wilkinson County by 1830 and were in Crawford County by the time of the 1830 census.

William is buried in his family cemetery which is located at the end of the road which goes past Spring Hill Church (on U.S. 80 in Crawford Co.) and ends at the home of Annie Lee Hunt. The cemetery is no longer recognizable but, according to Bobby Stokes of Lizella, is in the woods to the left of the road as you face Mrs. Hunt's house. Brothers William, John and Clement had adjoining land and all are buried in their own family cemetery on their own land. JRH

Notes for N
ANCY HATCHER:
When Nancy was born, the Hatcher families who were living in Richmond County, Georgia, had moved to South Carolina when Augusta was captured by the British in 1780. John and Mary Brady Hatcher who had married in Richmond County in 1779, must have moved their young family, probably, to Edgefield County, South Carolina where Nancy may have been born. jrh

OHN HANCOCK:
John Hancock served in Pvt. Thompson's Regiment of the Georgia Militia in the War of 1812.

The 1820 Wilkinson County, Georgia census records the following:
John Hancock: 1 male to 10; 1 male 26 to 45. 1 female 16 to 26.
This is the young family with only son Morgan who was born in 1816.

By 1830, John Hancock, along with his brothers, William, Clement, Jr. and Enoch was in Crawford County, Georgia.

See my Hancock file for a plat of the John Hancock cemetery, located in Crawford County, Georgia on U. S. 80. Also see notes for Elizabeth Mary Hancock (Lizzie Mae) who wrote the infomation about the graves in the cemetery.

Data included in John Hancock's family tree came from my own research, from the research of Elizabeth Mary "Lizzie Mae" Hancock, and from a Hancock Research File loaned to me by Bobby Stokes of Lizella, Georgia who had done many years of research on the families of Crawford County. jrh
