Descendants of Clement Hancock, Sr.

6. MARY2 HANCOCK (CLEMENT1) was born Abt. 1800. She married ADAM CLAY Abt. 1825 in Wilkinson County, Georgia, son of DAVID CLAY and EVE HARDIN. He was born 1796, and died October 06, 1873 in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Notes for A
DAM CLAY:
The following information was given to me in conversation with Bobby Stokes of Lizella, long-time genealogist of the Crawford County families of the 1800's.
Adam Clay went to Florida on a fishing trip and didn't return. He was assumed drowned.

The following 1850 Crawford County census record is probably that of the family of Adam and Mary Hancock Clay.

Clay, Eliza E.      10/F                        B. Ga.
Clay, Elizabeth      8/F                        "
Clay, Mary      14/F                        "
Clay, Mary      46/F             R.E. $1000      "
CLAY, Robert      5/M                        "
CLAY, Sarah      12/F                        "
William L.       19/M Laborer                  "

The 1840 Crawford Co. census for the Clay family lists:
Males: 1 5/10 = William L
1 10/15 = ?
1 40/50 = Adam
Females: 3 under 5 = Eliza, newborn; Mary, 4; Sarah, 2.
      1 5/10 = ?
      1 10/15 = ?
1 30/40 = Mary, Sr.

From Crawford Co., Georgia Inferior Court Records - 1830-1846:
p. 16: Adam Clay - 18 Nov 1833, Jury duty
p. 30: 20 Nov 1837 : Adam Clay vs. William & English
p. 32: 6 Feb. 1838: with others, Adam Clay, Road commissioner
p. 96: 2 Sept. 1844: Adam Clay, Jury Duty
p. 139:17 May 1852: William Clay, Jury Duty (would be 21 years old)

If Adam was still in Crawford County in 1844 but not on the 1850 census, then he must have disappeared/died between those dates. jrh

Notes from reh: Adam Clay was second son of David and Eve Hardin born abt 1796, married Mary ? and lived in Crawford County. About 1849 the family separated. He moved to Camden Co. while Mary kept the children in Crawford Co. Daughter Harriette Elizabeth while visiting Adam (in Florida) met and later married Noah Robinson, a son of James Robinson, Sr. of Camden/Charlton County. Hurricane wind capsized boat and Adam Clay drowned 6 Oct. 1873 in Fort Myers, Florida. reh
