ANCESTORS AND DESCENDANTS OF AVONIA JONES PARHAM - 429
The first ancestor of Avonia was Thomas Jones who came to the colonies in the early 1600's from Wales.
The next was Richard Jones born in 1660 in Virginia. Robert, his son, was born in 1690. To Robert was born Robert Jr., who remained single, living in Mecklenburg County, Va. (formerly Caroline County, Va.). Robert Jr. wrote his will and named his brothers --- James, John, Richard, and Ambrose --as the inheritors of his estate. Also named were nephews Robert, James, and Edmund Jones.
Ambrose, brother of Robert Jr., was a patriot in the Revolutionary War. Ambrose married Catherine Collins. To this union were born ten children:
James was born in 1746 and died in 1803. He married Amy Humphries Haliburton in 1768 and married again on July 23, 1795 to Winnifred Watkins. Ambrose was born in 1747 and died in 1809 in Columbia, Georgia. Stephen was born in 1749 and died in 1835. He first married Mary Adams and his second marriage was to Nancy Thompson. Reuben was born in 1754 and died in 1831. He married Elizabeth Tuck. Ann was born (?) and married Robert Sanford.
Phebe was born in 1756. The first time she married Benjamin Hawkins and then Thomas Gregory. Margret was born in 1765 and died on January 1, 1815. She married William Davie February 14, 1783. Mary was born in 1752 and married Francis Bressie in 1772. Gabriel was born (?) and remained unmarried. He died in 1838. Elizabeth was born in 1747 and died on May 24, 1811. She married James Winfree.
Avonia's great-great-grandparents were Reuben and Elizabeth Tuck Jones. They had ten children, also: Annie married William Loftis. Robert went to Kentucky. Martha married Jesse Bradshaw. Catherine married Loftis (?). Mary married John Ford. William went to Georgia. Elizabeth married Dudley Wilkerson. Reuben Jr. married Amy Jones. Gaberial remained unmarried. Ambrose, Avonia's great-grandfather was born in 1785 and died in 1855. He married Elizabeth Ford the first time and Elizabeth Paylor the second.
Ambrose and Elizabeth's children were all boys. (See The Heritage of Person Co.- Vol. II.)
Avonia's grandfather, Richard D. Jones, married Susie Smith. To this union eight children were born. Lem Jones married Eva Tuck. Herbert Jones married Susie Neal. Gabriel married Ida Overby. Reuben married Emily Maynes. Susie married Joseph Amis Norwood. John Pryor married Avonia J. Harris. Ambrosia Wyatt married Mamie Tuck sister of Eva Tuck. Louisa Elizabeth married Leonard Gale Gillis.
Avonia's father John Pryor lived in Big Rock born Mar. 1, 1878 M. Betty Neal on Dec. 18,1904, died Aug. 26, 1952; William Edward, B. May 7, 1880, married Annette Bell, died Oct. 6, 1951. Roscoe C. born Jan. 17, 1882, remained unmarried, died ?. Bernard born April 19, 1885, married Blanche Rogers, died Dec.15, 1926. Lemuel L. born April ll, 1887, remained unmarried, died Aug. , 1915. Opie Sue born, Feb.13, 1889, married Charlie Waller, died May 1969; and Avonia F. Jones born Oct. 5, 1892 married Alphus L. Parham on April 30, 1916. (See Person Co. Heritage Book -Vol. I).
To this union six children were born. (See #693 Vol. I Heritage of Person Co.) Their descendants to date include 17 grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren (See The Heritage of Person County - Vol. II. Ancestors and Descendants of Alphus L. Parham.
I have written the ancestors and descendants of Avonia Jones Parham in hopes that it will help someone that is seeking their family roots among the Jones.
