p. 11 "William Grinstead I was born in England in 1634. He came to Northumberland County, Virginia as an indentured servant of Col. John Mottrum. In other words, it seems that he was to work for Colonel Mottrum a given number of years (possibly six) in return for the payment of his passage to America. At the same time, Elizabeth Key (Kaye) was a maid-servant to this same family.
Apparently William was not permitted to marry until he had served out the full time with his benefactor, and so it was not until July 21, 1656 that he married eliza beth, the daughter of Thomas Key (Kaye).
Elizabeth bore William two sons, John and William II, and the two brothers married sisters, the daughters of John Parse. In his 1667 will, John Parse left his 500 acres of land to the two sons-in-law, the part called "Hog Towne" to John, and the part called "Long Neck" to William. Some of John's descendants are said to have settled in some of the counties of Northern Kentucky even before 1800, but in this study we are more particularly interested in the descendants of William Grinstead II."
Supplement, published October 1974, p. S-60 "Elizabeth Kay, daughter of Thomas Kay and Martha, was born in 1630 in Warwick County, Virginia. (Source: Virginia Colonial Abstract, Northumberland County, Vol. 19 by Fleet.)
