Shelbyville Democrat, Aug. 12, 1907, The train whistles alerted the town that a dangerous fire was in progress and summoned hundreds of people to fight the greatest fire in Fairland’s history...Then, the Harry Fox livery barn across the alley west of the pool room caught fire, followed soon by the E.V. Harrell Drug store. This was a two-story brick building stocked with drugs, hardware, and groceries...Bert Markland rushed into the Harrell Drug store and immediately grabbed 40 pounds of dynamite. He gingerly carried it southward down Walnut street and left it on Jake Dowthit’s front porch...The exact origin of the fire was never determined. Some suspected arson, while many advanced the theory that the roof of the West building was ignited by a spark from a passing train engine. What was certainly known was the Fairland community was saved by the tireless and heroic efforts of its bucket brigades who fought the terrible Fairland fire of 1907. 321.
