Notes for Francis Eugene Kavanagh: Melissa writes, "I was told by my Uncle Jim that Grandpa was always called 'Sam'. This is because he used to be called 'Sand', due to having lighter hair when he was younger - I think - but everyone thought they were saying 'Sam', so that stuck."
"Also, Grandma Phyllis changed Kavanagh to Kavanaugh (adding the 'u') because she thought it was prettier" - this is why there are different spellings in our family. However, the gravestones for his family all include the "u" so possibly it was his father that didn't use the u? I was also told the name was once O'Kavanagh"
"Grandpa was a mortician at Harman's Mortuary and he drove the ambulance in Beatrice. He was kind of strict and serious, from the stories I have heard. They didn't dare do wrong or they feared that "look" and they knew that meant business! Grandma said he was pouty, and when he was mad he would go off and wouldn't talk."
