I have traced all the Harnetts of the Burin Peninsula to John Hartnett , born 1794 in Lismore, Co. Waterford, Ireland. The original spelling of the name is Hartnett. According to folklore, John came to Newfoundland in 1817 as a servant to the family of James Healey at Lamaline. He later married James Healey's daughter, Elizabeth and moved to Lord's Cove. This family was one of the first permanent settlers at Lord's Cove. MUN folklore - Leona Fitzpatrick

Note from the old Burin Court Records at the Archives: "John Hornett vs Thomas Smyth Dec. 10 1817 Plaintiff states that defendant refuses to pay him balance of wages due. Complaint unfounded. Informed plaintiff to pay costs." This would tend to refute the "servant of James Healey" theory.

John Harnet along with 14 other residents of Lamaline signed a petition to his Excellency, the Governor, in 1825 (CO 270/35 1826) and again in 1827 (NLPA co 244/36,1827) complaining about the treatment they were receiving from the French. --Since his first son John, was born in 1827, this would indicate that John & Elizabeth lived for a time at Lamaline. Please see the related file for details on early instances of the Harnett name in Newfoundland.

Some of the older family names in my tree are Healey, Bonnell, Hepditch, Crews, Collins, Hillier, Foote, King, Fleming, Maddigan, Lambe, O'Reilly, Pike, Penney, Spencer, Hubert, Comerford, French, Edwards, Emberley, Crocker, Hodge, O'Rourke, Rae, Stacey

NEW - I have added as a Link below a new site with a searchable data base listing all the known relatives of the Harnett & Collins families. Due to privacy concerns, I have supressed data on living individuals born after 1921 and excluded anyone born after 1935. This data is continually being updated and/or corrected so check back from time to time. (This data has been moved to a new web site so you should update any bookmark you have for the Harnett / Collins relatives link.)

The photos below are not listed in any particular order. This is a free site and I have no control over the order in which items post.

Thanks to all who have submitted additions & corrections and photos. I look forward to sharing in the future.

Please contact me if you have any information on the origins of the family names you see on this site.
