Notes for A
VERY [1] HART:
From the Hart Family Genealogy book Maine State Library 929.28H.....
An Englishman who settled at Vinalhaven [Moved to Vinalhaven in 1754], an island on the Penobscot Bay, Maine. From here he went to (Jeremy Squam Island is now known as Westport Island - It is also written as one word) Jeremysquam Island where he sold 100 acres of land on the westerly side of Sheepscot river for 8 pounds sterling to James Brewer on 13 July 1764 as recorded by deed at Wiscasset, Maine, book 4, page 13. Avery then went to Boothbay, Maine, and sold out there 1 April 1768, for 10 pounds 100 acres of land to Andrew McFarland recorded at Wiscasset Maine, book 6, page 55. Then onto Cushing Maine, now the south shore of Tenant Harbor, St. George, where he remained until his death, about 1824/25. Mr. David W. Hart now resides [resided] in the same farm. He remembers his grandfather [Avery] as being very old, with his eyes sunk far back in his head.
Tradition says during the war with England in 1812-1815, an English war vessel came to the mouth of Tenant Harbor, and commenced firing into the harbor. Three schooners were lying in the harbor, and the English sent their small boats in and captured one of the schooners, which was loaded with bark. They hauled this out and set fire to it, but were compelled to flee for their lives as John Andrews, Avery Hart, and a few others fired upon them from behind rocks. The English vessel then proceeded the same morning to Portland, Maine, and on the way were met and captured by an American vessel.

page 13... Avery Hart, whose farm was situated at some distance from the highway, was granted the privilege, together with his sons, to work out the whole of their road tax for the year 1798.
page 101... October 14, 1850... for Representative to the Legislature ... Avery Hart one vote. AVERY HART sold land on Jeremysquam Island in 1764, moving to Boothbay, where he sold land there in 1768 [Lincoln Co., Records]. It appears Avery left Boothbay in 1768, settling in the town that is now known as St George, in an area that is still known to this day as Hart's Neck.
In 1788, Avery Hart is listed as a settler in the present town of St George to receive a deed from Henry Knox for lands that he had settled on. Boothbay vital records [Book A] list some of Avery Hart's children by his wife, Abigail. The records do not indicate the age of Avery and Abigail, but census records show them being born before 1755.
Assessment records for poll taxes in St George would place Avery's birth before 1733. It is probably safe to believe that Avery Hart was born between the late 1720s and the early 1730s. The death dates for Avery Hart and his wife are not known either.
Avery Hart and his wife appear in the 1790 and 1800 censuses of Cushing (now St George) and the 1810 census of St George There is a possibility that they are also the older couple living with Avery's son, William, in the 1820 census. The "Avery Hart Genealogy" says that Avery died "about 1824 or '25" and that his grandson, David W. Hart remembers him well. David W. Hart would have been 8 or 9 years old in 1824/25. (?)
