[page 2...October 20, 1789... When it became evident that certain residents were unable to support themselves and were liable to become charges of the town, or were undesirable new comers, they were warned by the constable upon a warrant issued by the selectman to depart from the town.]
[page 3...March 22, 1790... The practice of warning possible paupers to depart from the town seems to have been effective as the only person to receive support from the town this year was David Gordon, who was cared for by John Lewis for the munificent sum of two shillings and 10 pence per week. Twelve pounds were raised for his support.]
[page 4...April 4, 1791... David Gordon, who was the only inhabitant of the town unable to support himself, was made a boarder in the family of Ephraim Hall for one year. Mr. Hall was allowed two shillings and eight pence per week for his board.]
[page 8... April 6, 1795... The keeping of David Gordon, who continued to be the sole recipient of the town's bounty, was disposed at auction, William Page being the lowest bidder, his bid being three shillings and nine pence per week.]
[page 9...May 6, 1795... Col. Benjamin Burton, Eleazer Gay, and Joseph Robinson were made a committee to settle with John Hart, or to use any legal methods, to rid the town of David Gordon. It was voted that all expenses incurred in this humane and charitable proceeding should be paid by the town. Capt. John Hart having submitted an offer to the committee appointed at the May meeting to dispose of David Gordon, the selectman at once called a meeting to be held at the house of John Lewis, Thursday, July 1. The committee reported that Capt. Hart would either give the town $100 to keep said Gordon, or he would take the same amount and furnish a bond agreeing to save the town from any further obligation to support and maintain Gordon. It was voted to give Capt. Hart $100 to be paid in one year, provided sufficient sureties be furnished.
[page 17...April 6, 1801...The same privilege, to work out his road tax on his private road to get to the town road, was granted to John Hart and Jesse Hart, together with their neighbors on Hart's Neck.

Notes for S
USAN HART:
The following information was received in a letter from Lowell P(ete) Beveridge between him and Rose Christensen dated 1985.
"I'm having some fun working in the Kiff line, as well as trying to figure which of John's three wives could have been Rosean(ne)'s mother, It probably was Susan hart, although neither of the HART genealogies I am working with identifies this Susan. She was born according to Eaton's History of Thomaston, 15 Dec 1791, which could have made her either of Avery's last children, or first grandchildren. The problem is that only two of his sons could have been of an age to have had a daughter born on that date, and John, Avery's oldest son, has a son born 1 May 1791. So either Susan was premature (seven months after the other baby)or we have some dates wrong, or she's someone else's daughter. Jesse 1st had a daughter, Susan, but she reportedly married John Hall and resided in St. George. At any rate she would have been Jesse 2nd's full-blooded sister, ad I don't think that we have any evidence of too many uncles marrying nieces. That's a little too close. So, who is Susan Hart? I don't know. Assuming Avery was born at least twenty years before immigrating to the USA this would have made him 57 years old at the time of Susan's birth. Very possible!"
A son of James Hart of Appleton refers to Nathan Pease of Appleton as "old uncle Nathan", this is because their father's cousin, Eleanor Thompson, was married to Nathan.

Children of S
USAN HART and JOHN THOMPSON are:
20. i.   ELEANOR3 THOMPSON, b. June 3, 1796; d. November 27, 1872.
21. ii.   ROSANNA THOMPSON, b. October 1807; d. November 11, 1862.
