        111.  Cdr. George Vaugham11 Hart (George Vaughan10, Edward9, George8, Henry7, George6, Henry5, John4, John3, Thomas2, Unknown John1) was born 07 June 1805, and died 13 May 1895 in Kilderry, Ireland.  He married Jane Maria Hart 26 September 1835, daughter of George Hart and Maria Hume.  She was born 1809, and died 13 May 1895 in Kilderry, Ireland.

Notes for Cdr. George Vaugham Hart:

1805-1895  He was educated at the Royal School, Dungannon, and at the Royal Naval College, Portsmouth, He went to sea, serving for five years as a midshipman. He was then appointed mate on HM Yacht "Royal George" and HM Yacht "Royal Sovereign" under the future King William IV. From 1828 until 1832 he served as Lieutenant. On his Father's death he retired on half-pay, and assumed reponsibility for the family. He remained a Lieutenant for many years until his name came up to the 100th place when he was promoted to Commander. He managed the family estates until, on the death of his brother Henry in 1850 he inherited. The estate was heavily in debt, mainly due to the generous legacies left by his father. He lived through difficult and troubled times of poverty and unrest. He finally was given permission by the Encumbered Estate Courts to sell property. He sold half the land, and was able to clear the debts and invest the remainder of the monies. He was a responsible and just man, being appointed Deputy Lieutenant and a JP for Co Donegal. He ran the estates well and treated the tenants with consideration. An example of his kindness is shown in the correspondence between him and a man who had lived at Muff and fled to America due to debts.  This man wrot asking the Commanded, whom he addressed as "Honoured Sir" to arrange to sell his property, settle his debts, and buy a ticket for his small daughter to Philadelphia, so that she could travel out and join him in America.  He apologised profusely for causing so much trouble, but said that the Commander was the only man whom he knew, whom he could trust to deal honestly with the matter. (Incidentally, the man's property was worth £14, and the ticket to America cost £5)  Although they lived at Kilderry, the Commander spent a considerable part of his life at Drumaweir, Greencastle, where he loved watching the ships going to & fro. Many affectionate letters were found at Kilderry, written between him and his wife, when they were apart. He died at Kilderry and was buried at Muff.

Notes for Jane Maria Hart:

1809-1895. She was his cousin, daughter of George Vaughan Ledwich Hart (Harts of Glenalla Ref No, HG3.12) and Frances Patterson. Unfortunately little seems to be known about her. She helped her husband with the difficulties of managing the estates. They lived first at Glenalla, their main home was at Kilderry and they often stayed at Drumaweir and Port a Chapel in Greencastle. They were a devoted couple writing to each other daily when separated. They brought up their nehew John Henry Eustace Hart  son of John Richard James Hart, giving him a good education and establishing him as an Engineer with the Indian Government. She died at Kilderry and was buried at Muff.

They had three sons and eight daughters.

Carolina Louisa HAYWARD, Who was his cousin. Their parents were not happy about the close relationship. She was very pretty and had a lovely singing voice. Despite her sheltered upbringing, she coped well as a pioneer, running her own dairy herd, making butter for sale and keeping pigs and poultry as well as educating their children, and giving them a very happy childhood. Their life in Saltspring Island is described in a book by her daughter Beatrice. There seems to have been some hereditary problem due to this close marriage, and several of their children were born deaf

Notes for Adelaide Isabel Bessie Louisa Hart:

Adelaide babel Bessie Louisa HART, 1892-1999. Born at Falmore. Oleneely. Co Donegal.

Her mother died when she was 4 days old. She was educated along with her sisters Mabel and FE, and her cousins Herbert and Bessie Ward by her Aunt Edith Ward. When older she helped her sisters to run the house at Kilderry and look after her lather them. He would not permit her to leave home and take up any training, so it was not until after his death in 1919 that she was able to start training for a profession. In the early twenties she went to Glasnevin Horticultural College in Dublin, where she spent several very happy years. In 1927 she was accepted at St Thomas' Hospital to train as a nurse, after her training, she went to work at the American Hospital in Madrid, mostly going out to nurse people in their own home. In 1934/35 her brother Vaughan insisted that she return to England because of the Spanish Civil War. She continued private nursing in England, this brought her to the Foxlee family in Weybridge. where she nursed Bee Foxlee and accompanied her on an Amazon cruise, which was a great success. Bee made a book of delightful sketches and Ada kept a detailed Journal of the whole tour. (These only came to light in 1999) On the eve of their departure, Bee's brother Ray proposed to Ada. and on her return home they were married. They lived first at Ranmore. Wevbridge. then at Stylehurst and finally at Flowerwood, in Weare Street. Capel. Surrey. All her nieces and nephews remember those years on Weare Street because "Uncle Ray" and ~'Auntv Ada" kept open house, not only to the family, but to anyone in need of a home. During the war years they had many "PGs" who came to live with them to escape the bombing in London. those on holiday wanting to visit London and those on leave from the services. - They werc both keen gardeners, and after WW2 she helped to found the WI market in Dorking. where she sent in a continuous supply of fruit, vegetables, eggs. honey, cakes and preserves. The food at Flowerwood was always excellent and abundant and "Aunt Ada's" became a thvourite Home from home for all her young relatives. She and Ray were a devoted couple and had a very happy and united married life. Alter her husband's death she went to live at Aghan]oo. saying she would "look after my sister and my nieces, and do the cooking, washing ironing and gardening". She was then 34 . but she carried out her plans for many years. She also flew on several occasions to visit her Canadian relatives. She had a most lively and vivacious nature, and will be remembered not only for her kindness, generosity and cheerfulness but also for her naivete. trustfi.ilness and ability to see the best in people. She lived until she was 106, attending Church every Sunday until her death.

Notes for Frances Edith Hart:

Frances Edith HART (FE), 1888-1976. Born at Port a Veta. Greencastle. she was educated along with her sisters, by her aunt Edith Ward, in Wimbledon, and by her father. After her mother's death the three girls spent the term time at Wimbledon and their holidays with their father, either at Howth or with their grandparents in Galway or at K.ilderry. When older, she and her sisters kept house for their father at Kildert , where he continued to instruct them and awaken their interest in a wide range of subjects. They also occupied themselves with visits to relatives at Culdaff, Galway and Dublin. at home they were much involved in parish affairs. Amateur dramatics played a great pan in their Jives, drawing in cousins and friends from all around. (In these FE always played the male role!!) After their marriage, she and her husband lived at The Warren, Culdaff and then moved to Aghanloo House, near Limavady. Money was short, especially during the Depression years between the wars. . FE did all that she could to help to make the farm a success, learning to make butter. keeping a wide variety of poultry, and growing fruit and flowers for sale. She also taught their children, diligently preparing them for school. After her husbands death she and her daughter Marcia continued to run the farm. During WW2 they expanded and modermsed the farm. assisted by the youngest daughter Betty, and by landgirls. Despite all the difficulties, she enabled all her children to have a fill education including University. She gave her children a happy and contented childhood, not least by encouraging them to help in all farm and garden activities, thus giving them a feeling of genuine usefiilness. She was a true Christian in even' way, guiding and helping her children and setting them an example by joining in parish and local activities. She was a keen gardener and naturalist, and retained an interest in all her varied activities, literally up to the day of her death.

Henry Crofton YOUNG, 1867-1934. Born at Culdaff, Co Donegal. he was educated at Armagh Royal School and at Fettes College, Edinburgh. He then went out to Canada. to farm in Saskatchewan. In 1890 his father recalled him to run the Culdaff estates. In order to supplement his income, he became a Surveyor to the Land Commission. Whilst at Culdaff Harty endeavoured to improve conditions for the tenants and the local people. He became a magistrate, was Chainnan of the Temperance Society, Honorary Secretary to the lnnishowen Agricultural Society and he also founded the local Agricultural Show. After his mother's death in 1914, his nephew Robin took over the running of the estate, and Harry had to make a new career and home for himself, his wife and children. In 1914 they rented a small farm at Aghanloo which they later bought. By his progressive methods and hard work he slowly enlarged and improved the farm and the livestock. He continued with his Survey work, and during WWt he travelled all over Ireland buying horses for the army.

They had four sons and three daughters.
