I am researching the HARE surname. The family of HARE'S I am researching came from Wuerttemberg in Germany. The spelling of the surname may have been changed.

The 1880 census shows that Johann (John) HARE came from Wuerttemberg. Johann was born about 1810. Johann was married to Magdalena SPIES from Baden who was born about 1813. The 1880 census indicates Johann HARE'S parents were also from Wuerttemberg. It is possible that a brother, Anton (Anthony) emegrated with him to Cincinnati. They both were butchers in Cincinnati, Porkropolis, in the early 1830's.

About 1855 Johann began a brewery called the John Hare Ohio Brewery. It survied only a few years. There were several other brew masters who got their start working in Johann HARE'S Ohio Brewery. Some early brewing histories indicate John Kauffmann and George Wiedaman began their brewing careers with Johann HARE.

Johann's oldest son,George HARE, was born in Ohio about 1838. George was married to Mary or Maria BRAHM. They had at least eight children. George and Maria's oldest son, also named, George, was born in 1865. He is my great grandfather who married Elizabeth STOCKMAN. The names of the other children are Matilda, Elizabeth, Charles, Joseph, Mary, Edward, and Ignatius. George's wife Maria died in 1891. George remarried in 1895 to Caroline KELLERMAN BEDINGHAUS.

In the 1850 census Johann HARE is shown living next to Anton (Anthony) HARE. I have not made a firm connection, but I am beginning to assume that Anton and Johann were brothers. They owned ajacent property in Cincinnati. They both were butchers. Recently I have found a Joseph HARE who could be their father. Joseph also was a butcher, lived near Johann and Anton and appears in the 1830 census with two male residents who would be the ages of Johann and Anton. In 1850 Johann and Anton are also living next to Robert Spees [sp] SPEIS who could be related to Johann's wife Magdalena SPIES.

Johann Hare was in Cincinnati as early as 1835. Beginning that year he started buying up a number of parcels of land. Some of the land he bought was purchased from people living in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a young man of 24 when he began buying land in Cincinnati. I would welcome information that might connect John (Johann) HARE to other HARE's living in Baltimore or Wuerttemberg.

The early city directories of the 1830's indicate that Johann was a butcher along with Anton. Joseph Hare, another butcher, is also listed as living north of Liberty on the Lebanon Turnpike. He is also a butcher.

In 1855 John Hare began a brewery. It was called the John Hare Ohio Brewery. It was located along the present day Reading Road near Elsenor Avenue. The brewery was only in business about five years. It seems that two other Cincinnati brewers got their start with Johann Hare. There are references indicating that John Kauffman and George Wiedemann began their careers in the brewing business at John Hare's Ohio Brewery.

I would also welcome any information that would lead more specifically to the area of Wuerttemburg where John HARE came from and possibly Johann's brother, Anthony HARE, and his possible father, Joseph HARE.
