Notes for ELIJAH JOHN DOBLE, JR.:
The LDS records show that Elijah was born in Ireland. However, he was the seven out of eleven children and all his siblings, both younger and older, were born in Maine. Either Elijah was born earlier than it is indicated, or his mother went back to Ireland at the time of his birth. My guess is that he was born in Maine also.

Elijah served in B. Co. Hatch's Battalion Cav Regiment, MN. He deserted on August 11, 1863.

He married SUSAN MORTON DAKIN7 Jun 24, 1855 in Carroll Town, Penbscot County, Maine, daughter of JOHN DAKIN and ABIGAIL HERSEY. She was born Nov 16, 1833 in Amity, Aroostook County, Maine, and died Jul 16, 1914 in Royalton, Minnesota.

Notes for JOHN FREEMAN DOBLE:
John Doble was born when President Andrew Jackson was in office. It was the year 1835. His family lived in Springfield, Penobscot, ME, at the time of his birth. Of course, these were times of struggle for our fledgling country, and in Maine, as in other places in the United States during the 19th century, people were crying for reform. Movements to abolish slavery attracted much attention and support, especially in the North.

John spent his youth in Maine. He was also called John Freedom. In 1855 at 20 years old he moved with his new wife, Susan, to Minnesota. After a brief stay in Wisconsin (the summer) they settled in Wright County, which I understand was created in 1855. Wright County lies in East Central Minnesota, bordered on the north by the Mississippi River and to the east by the Crow River.

From Minnesota Civil War Soldiers: PVT John Freeman Doble, served from March 22, 1864 to his discharge on November 15, 1865. His unit was Maine; his town and residence were St. Cloud, MN. John served in the unit for one year and was discharged because of a disability.

1877 Purchase of Land: Certificate of Homestead Purchase obtained (See Scrapbook). The certificate was obtain from BLM indicating that John purchased land in Minnesota on August 13, 1877. The certificate was signed by Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th President of the United States.

Wright Country Genealogist, Glenn Pettit, found information showing that church services were held at an early date in the homes of the Minnesota settlers, and the homes of John and Lorenzo Doble are mentioned as often used for that purpose. Rev. Bartley Blaine of Clearwater is listed as "sometimes preaching."

John Doble died in 1915 at the age of 80 years old. I have not yet found where he was buried.

Notes for SUSAN MORTON DAKIN:
MRS DOBLE LAID TO REST
Interment made last Friday -- July 16, 1914
The Deceased Was a Settler of Minnesota

Miss Susan M. Dakin, was born in Amity, Aroostock County, ME., on Nov. 16,. 1833. It was there that childhood's happy years were spent: Its years for her were brief, indeed, her mother being an invalid, the responsibilities of the home soon fell to her. At the age of 11 she was required to assume the duties of housekeeper.

On June 24, 1855, she was united in marriage to Mr. John F. Doble in Carroll Town, Penobscot Co., Maine. In the New West of that day Minnesota was offering large opportunities to the pioneer, and soon after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Doble started West to build their home in its wilds. In the spring of '56 they stopped in Wisconsin where the summer was spent after which they came to Minnesota, arriving in Wright county in November, in which place they lived for ten years.

In January, 1860, in their little log schoolhouse, during a series of gospel meetings she found the Savior's love. She gave her heart to Jesus and learned to trust Him implicitly. She united with the Methodist Episcopal Church at that time, and was a faithful and devoted member during the rest of her life.

During their residence in Wright County, the great rebellion and Indian outbreak occurred. Her husband enlisted in the service of his country, and left Mrs. Doble and her four children at home alone. Her only protection was God, and that protection never seemed to her at any time to be inadequate, even while she was apparently in the hands of the Indians. During the Indian trouble, an instance occurred which showed her implicit trust in God. The Indians were plundering and murdering in that community, the neighbors had all sought refuge in the forts. One of the young cattle came running to the barn in the late afternoon with an arrow fast in its side; she removed the arrow, then went down into the woods and cut a stick to put against the door of the house. That night as usual, she went into the house, braced the door then took her children and knelt down around a chair, and committed herself and little children into God's hands for the night. Then they retired and slept undisturbed all night. She was visited by the Indians often but never was molested in any wise by them.

She lived in various places in Minnesota, near Clearwater and St. Cloud until '79, when they came to Royalty, which has since been their home except for a year or so spent at Klondike, Minnesota.

Mrs. Doble had been a hard working woman all her life. Her health at times had not been good; at times she has been a real sufferer. She possessed great will power, and had many times suffered in silence. Gratitude had been a marked characteristic of her life; she saw only a few things to complain about and many things for which to be thankful, and considered her blessings many.

Mrs. Doble enjoyed her usual health until about Christmas, 1912, when it was noticed that her strength was going from her. She continued about her duties of the home when it was at all possible. During the winter she was ailing and the physician was called several times, but not until the last month was she compelled to entirely give up her duties in her home.

Her physician advised her of the seriousness of her case. Bright's disease, in a chronic form. She remained hopeful and determined. Many times she called her pastor to her side and spoke of God's love and care for her; of His Word and of His promises. She called her friends to her side and sang the songs of Zion. Spiritually, she grew stronger day-by-day, physically she grew weaker, until Thursday morning, July 16 at 5 o'clock, she passed peacefully to her reward. At her bedside when death came were her husband, her son, Marshall, her daughter, Mrs. Canfield and her granddaughter, Margeret Doble.

She was the mother of five children, four of whom survived: C.W. (Chesley Wesley) of Rice, M.L. (Marshall Levi) of Bemidji: W.J. (Winfield John) of Aberdeen, Washington, and Mrs. L.A. Canfield of Brainerd (Lillian Enola Doble). Susan lived to the age of 81 years.

Out of town relatives who were at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. M. L. (Marshall Levi) Doble of Bemidji, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. (Lucias Augustus) Canfield and children, Alfred Canfield, and Miss Grace Walker of Brainerd. C. W. (Chesley Wesley) Doble and children, Mr. and Mrs. F. C. (Forest Chesley) Doble, Roy Doble and daughter of Rice. Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Gordan of Ft. Ripley, MN, and Mrs. D. L. (Dubury) Allison of Burtrum.

Notes for ALBA REASON LOVELACE:
Albe and Eugenia had a farm in Casey, Township, Ransome Co., ND. Grandma use to give bread to the Indians who came to the farm (Ref. Edith Miller). Grandpa would tell the story that when he was small boy his father hild him up to see President Lincoln in Illinois. (Ref. Willard Lovelace)

Albe and Eugenia met in St. Cloud, MN or Fairhave, MN. They were walking, their paths crossed, she dropped her hankerchief, he picked it up. Grandpa wore boots at his wedding. (Ref. Edyth L. Miller)

Grandpa loved lemon drops. As a boy I used to go to the store to buy them for him. (Ref. Eugene Lovelace Hoskins). I used to stop in at the library at school to pick up at least three books every day for grandpa to read, and take them back the next morning. (Ref by Willard Lovelace & Eugene L. Hoskins).

CORA ALICE22 DOBLE (ELIJAH JOHN21, HANNAH20 DRAKE, MOLLY19 COLE, EPHRAIM18, JOSEPH17, SUSANNAH16 GRAY, EDWARD15, JOHN14 GRAIE, RALPH13 GREY, RALPH12, EDWARD11, RALPH10, RALPH9, ALICE8 DE NEVILLE, RALPH7, LORD JOHN6, LORD RALPH5, RANDOLPH4, ROBERT3, GEOFFREY FITZROBERT2, ROBERT FITZMALDRED1) was born Jan 07, 1859 in Corrina, Wright Co., MN, and died Jun 23, 1937 in Brainerd, Crow Wing Co., MN. She married DUBURY LAFAYETTE ALLISON Mar 12, 1877 in Middleville, Minnesota, son of DAVID ALLISON and MARY BRENEMAN. He was born Abt. 1855 in Middleville, Wright Co., Minnesota, and died Abt. 1935.

Notes for CORA ALICE DOBLE:
LDS Record mentioned Forest Archie Doble as a relative. He was Cora's nephew. Cora attended Susan (Dakin) Doble's funeral in 1914, being listed as only Mrs. Allison.

I recently got in touch with Barbara Allison, descendant of Cora Doble. Cora worked as a domestic before her marriage and was known as a competent and respectable girl. Barbara said had a first cousin who was insane. She was a nervous child and had a mental breakdown while quite young. The cousin was also reported to have had a brother who committed suicide at age 18 or 20. The other brother was quite normal, however.

Cora lived with her son Roy Doble in Brainerd, Crow Wing County, MN, for many years, and died at his home at age 70 from heart trouble.
