There are varying accounts of Samuel G Gardiner, one that he was a Sea Captain as was his father. However, The census of 1850 indicates he was a clerk, and later census information indicates he was a merchant. The New York City Directory, 1869 gives three Samuel Gardiner listings:\par \par \tab Gardiner Samuel, electrician, 169 B'way\par \tab Gardiner Samuel G. silks, 361 B'way, h 121 E. 81st\par \tab Gardiner Samuel G. jr. imp. 361 B'way, h 121 E. 81st\par \par As it does not appear that Samuel G Gardiner had issue, it is likely that the two Samuel G Gardiners at the same addresses in the directory of 1869 are most likely the same person. perhaps he established the import business while his father of the same name was still alive and the second business after his father died. Census information on him includes a GARDINER SAMUEL G. 19 yrs, Male, Clerk, born NY, residing in New York County page 076 of New York City, 1st District, Ward 7 dwelling 488, family 1111, although no other relatives seem to be with him, Federal Population Schedule NY dated Aug 21, 1850 Federal Census Index NYS6a1144059 and a GARDINER SAMUEL, 28 yrs, Male, Merchant, residing with Henrietta Gardiner, 28 Female, New York County NY page 831 1st District, 21st Ward. NYC, Federal Population Schedule NY dated June 21,1860 Federal Census Index NY585105257. These do not indicate that he was a Sea Captain. \par \par His death certificate indicates he died in Lynbrook, Hempstead, Nassau County and that he was born in Southold, Long Island. His father's name appears as Samuel Gardner and his mother's name appears as Casandra Overton. The informant was Selina Gardiner. It also gives his occupation as a merchant. United States, The 1900 United States Census, Southold, Long Island, vol 241, E.D. 793, Sheet 3, Line 13, Roll 1166, shows him as husband of Selina Harrison. He and Selena again appear on the 1920 census in the Village of Lynbrook, Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, New York, Enumeration District 31, page 8. \par \par In 1865 S. G. Gardiner was elected to the office of superintendent of Sunday school, 86th Street Methodist Church, Park Ave, NYC, and continued at the head of the school till April, 1873, when he removed his residence to Flushing, Long Island. In 1864 he was a Church Leader in Class No. 2. and a Trustee from 1863- 1874. (Published at the Celebration of the Fortieth Anniversary of the Church, March 4, 1877)\par \par His headstone Inscription is at Woodlawn Cemetery together with those of his two wives:\par \par \tab\tab Henrietta Harrison, wife of Samuel G Gardiner\par \tab\tab\tab January 28, 1832 - May 1, 1897\par \par \tab\tab\tab Selena Harrison, his wife\par \tab\tab\tab Born 1849 - Dec 9, 1931\par \par So we can conclude that he was born in Southold, Suffolk, Long Island and moved to New York City sometime before 1850 at a young age. His mother, Lura Ann Gardiner (Overton) remained in Southold, so it seems he was on his own at the time. He married Henrietta Harrison on Christmas day 1854 and moved from the lower East side to the upper East side by 1860 and was likely a silk merchant with a business on Broadway. He remained in Manhattan until at least April 1873 when he and Henrietta removed to Flushing, Nassau County (then Queens). She died in the Town of Hempstead, Village of Freeport in 1897 and he married her sister, Selena and resided in Southold with her by 1900. In 1921 he died in the Town of Hempstead, village of Freeport. It may be that he held residences in both Hempstead and Southold, perhaps a summer place, it was immediately adjacent to the home of Edwin O Harrison in 1900. \par \par His parents are almost certain, his father was also Samuel and his mother was Lura Ann Overton, although it would be hard to decipher this name as his mother on his death cetificate unless it was known beforehand. Other researchers also have his mother as Lura Ann Overton and we tend to agree. It answers the question regarding how could it be possible that Edwin O Harrison, brother of Henrietta and Selena, living in Stamford, Connecticut at least in 1887 when his wife Harriet Ketcham passed, could have met and married Mary Overton, born and raised in Southold, Long Island, a considerable distance in those days, even with Ferry over Long Island Sound. A days travel at least, likely more. I don't believe the train from NYC goes as far as Southold. With Lura Ann Overton as his mother, she was the sister of Mary Overton's father, Joshua Alanson Overton, also of Southold, we have Edwin O Harrison marrying Samuel G Gardiner's niece. This fits well and therefore we say that Samuel Grover Gardiner was the son of:\par \par \tab Samuel Grover Gardiner\par \tab m Lura Ann Overton \par \par \par \cf0\f1\fs20\par }
