NOTES ON THE LIFE OF WILLIAM WESLEY HATTAWAY

WILLIAM WESLEY HATTAWAY was better known as WES , but little is known about his childhood. The 1870 FEDERAL CENSUS list him as living with his parents , BATON & ADA HATTAWAY , in Coffee Co. Alabama at the age of six. He does not show up on the 1880 ALABAMA FEDERAL CENSUS when he would have been fifteen or sixteen years old. WESLEY's parents were living in Walton Co.,FLORIDA at this time (1880), but Wesley was not listed with the other children. The 1890 FEDERAL CENSUS was destroyed but the 1900l FEDERAL CENSUS finds WES HATTAWAY living with his wife TEMPY and six children in DeFuniak Springs, Walton Co., Florida. Records found in the Coffee County Court House in Elba Al. shows Wesely and Tempy were married on Dec 26 1882. The Walton Co. DEED RECORDS shows that WES & TEMPY bought and sold some properties in the late 1890`s. These included lots 1626,1667,1671,& part of lot #6. All these lots were located in DeFuniak Springs Fl. By 1897 all the properties had been sold, but WES & TEMPY continued to live in DeFuniak Springs until his death in 1918 .
WES HATTAWAY presence did not go unnoticed in Walton Co. , as W.W. (WES) HATTAWAY name can be found on the Circuit Record Cases #321 May 5, 1892 and #335 Oct 25, 1893. Both of the cases pertain to the same charge "Larceny of a Animal". WES along with HUGH P. PRESCOTT was charged with stealing an animal valved at ten dollars, the property of T.M.KING. WES was brought to trial on Oct 20, 1893. The jury's verdict was quote "We find the defendants NOT GUILTY " C.J.McKinnon Foreman.
The 1910 FEDERAL CENSUS locates WESLEY & TEMPY living in DeFuniak Springs along with seven children . They had a total of nine children (4 boys & 5 girls). The two oldest (Frank & Missouri) had married and moved away by 1910.
The death of WILLIAM WESLEY HATTAWAY came after a long battle with Alcoholism on May 2, 1918. An insight in WES's life can be obtained from this death notice in BREEZE , a DeFuniak Springs newspaper , dated 9 May 1918.
