NOTES ON ZACKERY TAYLOR JONES' LIFE
*****************************************************************

ZACKERY TAYLOR JONES life is hard to trace. He can be found in the 1860 census living with
his mother CLARRISA JONES in the home of a S.W. Foster family. There are three Jones boys
Henry W.,13, Jacob,12, and Zacky,10. It is assumed that these three were brothers. Some time
between 1860 and 1870 Zackery came to Escambia Co.,Fl. with his half-brother and "Mother
Jones",Clarrisa This is according to a family story. This story also tells that "Mother Jones" went
to work as a housekeeper for a Richard Dean. The 1880 census tends to prove this to be true as
living next door to both Zackery and Henry W. Jones is a Richard Dean with his wife named
Clarrisa. Clarrisa's maiden name was possibly BARLOW, This fact is not known for sure. Clarrisa
Jones with her husband Robert appears on the will of Aron Barlow as a heir. Her relationship to
Aron Barlow is not stated while the other heirs are. The Baldwin County records indicates that her
name prior to marring Robert Jones was Snider which adds to the puzzle. Their marrige is listed
as Dec. 15 1846. Robert Jones died some time between 1850, the birth year of Zackery and
Clarrisa marriage to Joshua Bryars in 1856. Clarrisa is listed as a widow. Its not clear what
happened to Joshua Bryars as Clarrisa is listed in the 1870 living with Joseph R. Dean along with
her son Joseph J. Bryars in Escambia Co. Fl. No record of the marriage of Joseph Richard Dean
and Clarrisa can be found. Clarrisa is buried in Whitmire Cemetery Escambia Co. as Clarrisa L.
Dean. She was born Sep 1829 and died Feb 21 1882.
In the 1870 census Zackery Taylor Jones cannot be found even though he had been married for
two years. He had married Vashti Aille Whitmire, daughter of Stephen W. & Mary Pauline "Polly"
Gibson Whitmire of Santa Rosa Co., Fl. Zackery's brother Henry W. Jones was living in
Escambia Co. and it is assumed that Zackery also was living in Escambia Co.
Vashti Allie Whitmire Jones' name is something of a puzzle. Her name on her headstone is
VASHTI A., but she was known by her grandchildren as "GRANNY BASH". At first it would appear
that this was from a mispronouncing of VASHTI, but her name on the 1880 census was listed as
B.A. In the earliest census that she can be found (1850) , her name is listed as BASHEBA and in
the 1860 census her name is BASHABY. It appears that her name may have meant to be
BATHSHEBA from the Bible, but no one knew how to spell it. The name could have been
BARSHIBA, which was the name of her father,s sister,BARSHIBA DIXON WHITMIRE. Vashti was
the name she went by in her later years as this is what appears on some land deed records. The
"A" in her name is assumed to be ALLIE because some of her grand children have ALLIE in their
names.

The 1880 census finds Zackery T. Jones in Escambia Co. along with his wife, Vashti, two sons,
Kirby & Stephen, and daughter Allie. Zackery's occupation was listed as laborer.
In 1886 Henry W. Jones bought forty(40) acres in Ferry Pass near the location of the ferry
across the mouth of Escambia Bay. This property was later(1895) bought from Henry W. Jones
by Zackery Taylor Jones. This property remained the home site of the Jones family including
Kirby's, Zackery's eldest son. The property was sold to E.J. Roberts in 1923 upon the death of
Kirby. The description of the property is as follows "NORTH HALF OF LOT 2, SECTION 18,
TOWNSHIP 1, SOUTH, RANGE 30W ". The location of the property is near the intersection of
Davis Hwy. & Olive Rd. and now is the location of the West Florida Hospital Complex.
Family members say that Zackery provided for his family by building houses in the Ferry Pass
area as well as in Pensacola.
Zackery Taylor Jones died at the age of 54 on Nov.9, 1904 and was buried in the Whitmire
Cemetery, near his home in Ferry Pass, on Nov.11, 1904.
Vashti Allie Whitmire Jones,66, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs J.H. Hoyt, 518 E. Jackson
St. Pensacola, Escambia Co., Florida. at 10:45 pm Friday, June 14, 1912. She was buried the
next day along side her husband in Whitmire Cemetery.
Zackery and Vashti had three children:
1.Kirby Ledbetter b/May 18, 1869 m/Mary E. Hoyt
2.Stephen Judge b/Mar.13, 1873 m/Lela G. Nobles
3.Allie May b/ 1876 m/John H. Hoyt
