FUNERAL SERVICES FOR Mrs. CLYDE JONES HATTAWAY, 31 wife of DUDLEY
HATTAWAY, who died Monday night in BELLE GLADE, Fla. after a short illness will be held
Thursday afternoon at 4 o,clock from the home of a sister, Mrs. W.E. WILSON 1919 North
Fourteenth Avenue. Rev. GARNER HALL of WEST HILL CHURCH of CHRIST will officiate. Burial
will be in WHITMIRE CEMETERY with T.M. LLOYD in charge.
Mrs. HATTAWAY, who was born at FERRY PASS the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. KIRBY
JONES is survived by sons DUDLEY Jr. and JERRY, a daughter KATHERINE: four sisters; Mrs.
W.E. WILSON, Mrs. JOE REICHMANN, Mrs. JOE GIBSON of FERRY PASS, and Mrs.
HOWARD BROWN of ENSLEY, and a brother, BRYAN JONES of MONTGOMERY.
The body will arrive here tonight.
Pallbearers will be W.E. WILSON, J.W. GIBSON, H.D. BROWN, J.J. REICHMANN, J.D.

NOTES ON THE LIFE OF DUDLEY P. HATTAWAY Sr.

DUDLEY HATTAWAY's childhood is some what obscure , except that he is found in the 1910
FEDERAL CENSUS living with his father and mother along with four sisters and two brothers.
Another brother and sister had married a moved away .It is evident that he grew up in DeFuniak
Springs , Walton Co. , Florida as he was living there when his father died (1918).
DUDLEY's mother, TEMPY, remarried on January 20th 1921. It is believed that he may have
lived with his sister MARIE & her husband EARL WALDO until he married. These two families
(HATTAWAYs & WALDOs) traveled around the country together evidenced by the fact that
DUDLEY Jr. & EARL Jr. were born in 1928, in Los Angles California . They were also living next
door to one another in Belle Glade , Florida in the 1930s
DUDLEY had no specific trade as he worked in various jobs such as salesman , shipyard worker
, and anything else he could find. He moved around a lot, probable looking for work . This can be
seen by the birth places of his children - DUDLEY Jr. Los Angles Cal. 1928 ; CLYDE JERRY New
Orleans La. 1930 ; CATHERINE ELIZABETH Belle Glade Fl. 1934
DUDLEY was living in Belle Glade Fl. in 1938 when on Jun 28 his wife, CLYDE, died from blood
poison leaving him with three children to raise (DUDLEY P.Jr. age 10; CLYDE JERRY age 8 ;
CATHERINE age 4). The loss of his mother , TEMPY , earlier that year and the loss of his young
wife, coupled with the the sole responsibility of the children, along with his drinking problem
proved to much for him . The family was broken up when the three children moved in with various
aunts and uncles . DUDLEY spent most of the next two years in and out of hospitals trying to
break his drinking habit.
One final attempt to get the family failed after about two years living in Whisler Al., a suburb of
Mobile .The alcohol problem proved to much for DUDLEY and he turned the children over to
JOSEPH J & VISTERA REICHMANN in 1942. VISTERA was CLYDE' sister.
On Dec 14 1945 about 6 pm.DUDLEY P HATTAWAY Sr. was arrested for public drunkness at
the Gilbert Hotel Pensacola , Fl. At 10pm that night he died in his jail cell from acute alcohol
poisoning. DUDLEY P HATTAWAY Sr. was buried along side his wife in Whitmire Cem.
Pensacola, Escambia Co., Florida on 16 Dec 1945.
DUDLEY and CLYDE had three children;
1. DUDLEY PENDELTON Jr. BORN 17 Jan 1928
2. CLYDE JERRY BORN 22 Feb 1930
3. CATHERINE ELIZABETH BORN 31 May 1934

OBITUARY

DUDLEY P. HATTAWAY

Funeral services for DUDLEY P. HATTAWAY 42, who died suddenly Friday night will be held at 2
p.m. Sunday in Fisher - Pou chapel the Rev. C.C. PARTRIDGE officating. Burial will be in
Whitmire Cemetery.
HATTAWAY had been an employee of the Higgens shipyard in New Orleans and a frequent
visitor to Pensacola.
One daughter CATHERINE of Pensacola, two sons DUDLEY Jr. and JERRY C., Pensacola five
sisters Mrs LILLE LANGFORD and Mrs. H. SKIPPER of Pensacola, Mrs. E.W. WALDO of
Panama City
, Mrs. KATIE CARVER of Tallahassee, and Mrs. MISSOURI BEASLEY of Mobile, and a brother
FRANK HATTAWAY of DeFuniak Springs survive.
Pallbearers will be W.O. REICHMANN, W.E. WILSON, E.W. WALDO, F.C. ROCHE, J.J.
REICHMANN and H. SKIPPER.

I was born during the great depression of the 1930's in New Orleans La. I don't know why my
parents were in that city, but jobs were hard to find in those days and my father moved around a
lot. working at any job he could get. My brother, Dudley Jr., was born in Los Angles Ca. on Jan
17, 1928.
My earliest recollection of my childhood was when I was about five years old when we lived in
Belle Glade Fl. My father worked as a salesman with an automoble and farm equipment dealer.
My father's sister Marie along with her husband Earl Waldo and son Earl Jr. lived next door. My
sister Catherine was born in Belle Glade on May 31, 1934.
I started school there and continued to live in Belle Glade until 1938. In June of 1938 my mother,
while washing clothes in the back yard, stumped her big toe. The toe became infected and blood
poisoning set in. On June 28, 1938 my mother died in the Everglades Memorial Hospital, Pahokee
Fl. She was 33 years old at the time. Her body was returned to her birth place, Ferry Pass,
Escambia Co. Fl. Clyde Elizabeth Jones Hattaway was buried June 30 1938 along side her
parents, Kirby Ledbetter and Mary Elizabeth "Bessie" Hoyt Jones, in the Whitmire Cemetery.
