Samuel was born 7 Aug 1837, Milltown, Me. Hemarried Martha C. Henry (1844 - 1928) on 5 Jan 1865, in Calais, Me, dau of William Henry and Mary O. Smith. They lived in Maine. During the Civil War he was a member of the 22nd Maine Infantry Co. "F".He worked for the railroad and served as a fireman, engineer, conductor the finally became the superintendent of Lewy Island and Baring Railroad. Along with his sons, Roscoe and Kimball they worked the entire "Iron Horse"period of the railway for 6 companies. Samuel died Mar 1905.
Obit;Many in Calais heard with sorrow Monday of the death of Samuel Wallace Haycock, which occurred shortly after midnight.Mr. Haycock was a good citizen, a kind and generous husband and father, an open hearted an unselfish Christian gentleman, and deservedly won the respect and esteem of all with whom he came in contact.Mr.Haycock was born in Milltown, ME 7 August 1837.When nine years of age he was made fatherless by a drowning accident, and at the early age of 13 he went to work on the boom.For three years he was thus engaged, when he began work on the Calais and Baring Railway, as fireman, and was successively promoted to engineer, conductor and finally succeeded the late W. W. Sawyer as superintendent, which position he occupied to the satisfaction of the company and the patrons of the road line after the sale of the line to the Washignton County Railway Company.
Mr. Haycock was a veteran of the Civil War, enlisting in the 22nd Maine, and in the swamps of Louisiana contracted the disease which ended in his death.He is survived by his widow, formerly Miss Martha Henry of Baring, to who he was married in January of 1865, tow daughters and three sons -- Mrs Clarence Trimble, Miss Minnie Haycock, Roscoe H., Kimball and Chester.Besides these, Mr.Haycock leaves a mother Mrs. Mary Haycock, now in her 93rd year, and who resides with her daughter Mrs. J. L. Woodcock, a borther, Mr. Kimball C. Haycock of Fort Fairfield, and a sister Mrs. John L. Woodcock of Calais.
The funeral occured yesterday afternoon, and was attended by Rev. Dr. Padelford, of the Baptist Church, of which Mr. Haycock was a member.The pall bearers were Messrs. Frank Nelson, Irving R. todd, Jas. L. Thompson and Martin Cone.He was buried on 22 Mar 1905 in Calais, Washington, ME at Calais Cemetery.,He was Railroad mechanic.Samuel was a corporal in the Civil War in Company F, 22nd Me Infantry as an engineer.Samuel has light hair, light complexion, blue eyes, 5 fit 9 inches tall.During the Civil War in the swamps of Louisiana he contracted the disease which ended in his death.
