Robert A. Stephen joined the Confedrate troops to serve in the War Between teh States. Military records show that he enlisted at Brenham on 27 Aug 1861 in Cpt. McPhail's company of the 2nd Reg.'t Texas Mounted Volunteers. He was on the roll of POW's received at New Orleans 21 May 1864 after having been captured at De Glaise, LA on 18 Apr. 1864. Further records show him as confined to the St. Louis USA General Hospital at New Orleans with intermittent fever, he returned to duty 7 July 1864. He was then exchanged in a POW exchange at Red River Landing 22 July 1864. Robert was listed as a resident of Comanche County in 1871 when he signed a McLennan County deed releasing vendor's liens on property sold by his grandfather James Walker, Jr., prior to the latter's death in 1873. Census records show Robert and his wife Martha in Comanche County. Records of 1910 show them in Mason County, where Robert's profession is listed as preacher.
