Notes for Simon Clarkson Freebody: Was tried at the Old Bailey London in 11/7/1787 on a charge of stealing a dead lamb from Richard Elland's Slaughterhouse at Enfield. Then carrying the dead carcass to London and selling it to a butchers wife at Kingsland Road, Shoreditch, telling her that he was a drover. It was indentified by the owner by two wooden Sets which had been taken with it. After 9 months in Newgate Prison, Simon Freebody was sent to the Hulk "Stanislaus" on the 25/4/1788. His age was given as 20. On the 16/11/1789, he was embarked on the "Surprize", a Convict transported as part of the Second Fleet and arrived in Port Jackson on the 26/6/1790.
On the 3/11/1794, after his sentence had expired, Simon along with 10 others, including Thomas Akers, was granted 20 acres of land at Mulgrave Place on the Hawkesbury River, just south of the present site of Windsor. His family then lived in the area for more than 60 years.
From at least 1795 Simon lived with Mary Wells. In 1804 he received 100 acres in the district of Mulgrave Place. Simon died in 1856 at his daughter Sarah Hoskisson's home "Clifton" and Mary in 1855. There is a stone in St Matthews Windsor in memory of Simons age 103 being the greatest age recorded in the churchyard. Between the granting of these two portions of land Simon stood trial for his part in the alleged murder of the two natives by killing them with a cutlass and burying the bodies, in the Hawkesbury in 1799, in an attempt to avenge the murder of his friend Thomas Hoskisson. The men were found guilty of the killings of the natives but were released on orders from England. Later Simon's Daughter Sarah married the youngest son of Thomas Hoskisson.
