Mary Butler and Mary Desmond were tried at the Old Baily on 9/9/1789, for stealing a wicker basket of fresh beans, the main evidence against them was the owner of the beans, but a man who came to the markets every morning with his mistresses goods.

The beans were the property of Daniel Reed, who's wife Amelia said "I live at Battersea and sell my garden stuff at Covent gardens.

ANTHONY CRAGGS STATEMENT.

I am a watch-man at Covent garden and I saw them two women about there and when I came up the women ran off, I asked the gentaleman what was the matter, and he told me I was the person who stopped the two gentlewoman, I asked them, "good woman what do you have in your basket, They dropped it and ran off", he alleged they had been talking in Irish and though he did not understand them himself, He understood they had taken the basket of beans.

PRISONERS DEFENCE

We had been at labour, and went to get some drink, the prosecutor began to behave imprudent and this woman slapped his face, and he said you Irish bitch I will be revenged of you, This prisoner dropped a shilling, And we got a candle to look for it, and this prosecutor came up.

PRISONER DESMOND'S DEFENCE

This man owed me an old grudge, he wanted to use me impudent, I was frightened at a big man laying hold of me and I dropped a shilling and I had a basin in my hand at the time and the watchman came up and then the prosecutor said these ladies are going to steal the beans.

PROSECUTOR

I never saw one of them before and I have used the market for 15 years, they brought the goods out of this square by the dial and it was broad daylight.

The prisoner Butler called five witness who gave her a good character.

Tried by the Middlesex jury before Mr Justice Wilson.
