Notes for James Headley: He was the last of the Headley brothers to come to Alabama in the mid 1800s.
He became a prominent man in the Darlington community, appearing in public land records for over twenty years, buying and selling large tracts of land. In July 1827, James paid $150 for 128 acres between Newman Swamp in Darlington County. In 1833, he purchased another 50 acres from Samuel N. Atkinson, a sale witnessed by James' younger brother, William Headley. In December of 1846 James sold 312 of the acres he and Lucritia owned to Elias B. Dubose for twelve-hundred dollars. This was the last reference for James in SC and not long after he moved his family to Autauga County, Alabama.
