Notes for Mary Jane Headley: Mary Jane Headley was bound over to Phillip Coker in 1854 and is listed in the 1860 Coosa Co., AL Census with the family of Phillip (30) and Nancy (29) Coker. Mary Jane, age 11.
Phillip's name is signed as Felise and again as Phelis Coker on the legal court documents.
The Phillip Coker families, of which there are several generations in Alabama, were very wealthy and such court actions of then orphaned children was nothing short of white slavery because the girls were used in their kitches/washing clothes/caring for their babies etc... and boys were used to care for farm animals on their very large farms.
Did Mary Jane die? Or did she find a way to escape possible mistreatment. No marriage records have been found o after this 1860 census. She would have been 21 or 22 in 1870.
