Notes for Charles L. Rohde: He had red hair and sported a goatee. He was a stowaway on a ship from Bremmerhaven on the norther coast of Germany. His family were ship builders. He came to America because he didn't want to be inducted into the Kaiser's Army. He was discovered and taken to the captain, who having found out he was a good carpenter, allowed him to work off his passage with his skills.
All of his sons went into their father's ship-building business.
Three of the 5 sons became involved in embezzlement from the business. The instigator was found out and killed himself.
