Descendants of ROBERT the I BRUCE

Generation No. 1

1. ROBERT the I¹¹ BRUCE (ROBERT¹⁰ de BRUCEVII, ROBERT⁹, ROBERT⁸, WILLIAM⁷ BRUCE, ROBERT⁶ de BRUCEIII, ROBERT⁵, ROBERT⁴, ROGNVALD³, BRUSSE EARL of CAITHNESS &² SUTDERLAND, SIGURD 2nd EARL of¹ ORKNEY) was born 11 July 1274 in Turnberry Castle on the Firth of Clyde, Scotland, and died 07 June 1329 in Cardoss Castle, Dunbantonshire, Firth of Clyde, Scotland. He married (1) ISABEL MAR WFT Est. 1287-1296, daughter of DONALD Mar and ELLEN. He married (2) ELIZABETH de BURGH 1302.

Notes for ROBERT the I BRUCE:

*** ROBERT the BRUCE I was born at Turnberry Castle on the Firth of Clyde. He was the oldest of several children, ( 4-brothers and 1-sister I have found thus far ), born to ROBERT BRUCE the 6th Lord of Annandale and MARJORIE the Contess of Carrick.(some records also list the name as Margaret of Carrick...I am not sure, yet, if this is indeed the same person who a near relative...I will research further to try and verify...dkh).

He was the grandson of ROBERT "The Competitor", 5th Lord of Annandale, who became the heir to the Scottish throne by decree of Alexander II in 1238.

His maternal grandfather was, GILBERT De CLARE of Gloucester.

I have not discovered much information on his early childhood years. But as some researchers have noted, these were probably years, in which along with his several brothers, were spent in midst of his large family learning the way of life for those of Noble birth. Which would have included such things as learning weaponry, battle strategies, the running of vast lands, castles, and the thousands of peasants and other family that were dependant on them. This training would have started at a very young age because of the constant threats to the Scottish way of life and their freedoms.
Because of Scotland's thurst for all things Scottish, they would have been taught Scottish and Family history both actual and folklore. (This fire still burns within the descendants, like myself, yet today!!!dkh).

*** 1286 - History, thus far uncovered, next discovers him listed as a witness on a deed for Alexander MacDonald of Isley. His name appears on this document beside the signature of his father....Which tells us that this family was very literate, especially for those times, in that they both could read and write.

*** "The Day of Judgement" - is what the date that Alexander III chose when he called for the meeting of his council at Edinburgh on the 18th of March is referred to. His heartfelt royal and personal duty led him to ignore the advice and warnings of his nobles of traveling in the midst of a severe storm both of nature and political. This stormy weathered prevailed, as did Alexander, and he insisted on continuing his journey, he cross the waters on the ferry from Dalmeny to Inverkeithing to go to Kinghorn and see is young Scottish bride, Yolande.
He arrived safely at Inverkeithing and continued to ignore the strigent warnings and objections of his nobles. He refused the hospitality of the royal perveyor to stay and at least wait until daybreak. He insisted on continuing his journey accompanied with 2-guides.
His body was found at the base of a cliff. His body and neck broken and the future of Scotland and peace doomed with the death of their King. Scotland was "plunged" into dark turmoil.

*** In 1284, at a council in Scone, Alexander III had made arrangements and received approval that upon his death he could name Margeret, the "Maid of Norway", as his heir to the Scottish throne.
Scotland had never been under female rule before and some of the nobles demanded that the old Scottish tradition of having the closest male relative named heir and prevailed.
This brought much heated anger and hostility between the BRUCE and COMYN families to a head and a Civil War in Scotland was ensured.

This was delayed by the intervention of the Church of Scotland who assumed the role as head-of-state, deciding and ruling on the issue. At Scone a month after Alexander's funeral on 29 March, 1286, they adviced Edward I of England, they called for all Scottish Nobles to pledge their allegience to Margeret who was the last surviving member of the ancient House of Canmore.
A regency was also appointed to oversee and represent the Royal House. This was made up 6- guardians. Two Earls of Buchan and Fife, two Bishops of St. Andrews and Glasgow and two Barons,
James STEWART and John COMYN.
Edward I was in Gascony at this time and upon hearing of Alexander III's death he moved to ensure the alliance of his northern neighbor. He made sure that the Queen of Scotland would have as her consort, none other thatn his only surviving heir, Edward of Carnarvon. He accomplished this by trapping Margeret's father, King Erik of Norway, by the common scheme of thrusting money at him in the form of loans and then calling in his debts.

*** During this time back in Scotland, the Bruce family was being led by, Robert the Competitor. Under his tutelage the seized the castles of Dumfries, Wigton, and a Balliol stronghold, Buittle. The clan leader also arranged an agreement with James STEWART, Angus McDONALD - the Lord of Isles, the Earls of March and Menteith and a variety of other nobles.

This pact, known as "THE TURNBERRY BOND", was sealed and inacted in an attempt to deter John Balliol and to let Edward I know that they, the BRUCE'S, were more capable of assuming governorship of Scotland. In a sly and coniving manner, Edward pretended to back and support the guardians of Scotland thus defusing the situation and obtaining peace in Scotland....a peace that would be shortlived.

*** ROBERT WAS KING of SCOTLAND 1306 thru 1329. He was a skillful and courageious leader who freed Scotland from English control. After he defeated EDWARD I of England he was crowned in 1306 at Scone. Robert was then defeated in 1306 at Methuen and fled to the island of Rathlin off of the Irish coast. Returning to Scotland in 1307, he defeated EDWARD II at Bannockburn in 1314 and captured BENWICK in 1318.

*** He was recognized as King by the English in the Treaty of Northhampton in 1328.

*** A lion was his favorite pet and shipbuilding was his favorite hobby.

*** Some of the old records list his cause of death as leprosy but I have yet to confirm this...dkh

Princess MARJORIE / MARGERY¹² BRUCE, born 1296 in Scotland; died 02 March 1315/16 in Scotland.

Child of ROBERT BRUCE and ELIZABETH de BURGH is:

MALE¹² BRUCE, born 1324.
