The Heald Family of Concord Mass, Chester VT, and Canton IllUpdated December 6, 2007 | LawrenceHeald Portland,Oregon,United States [email protected] |
This is a history of one branch of the New England Heald Family. Descended from John Heald, Concord freeman 1641, the family remained in the Concord Mass area until 1776, when Daniel Heald, who fought at Old North Bridge and Ticonderoga, removed his family to Chester, Vt. The family remained there until 1857, when Charles Thadeus Heald removed to Canton Ill. His brothers, then his elderly parents, followed. The history includes lines back to our earliest ancestors, including more than 180 who immigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony before 1650, and Mayflower passengers John Howland, Stephen Hopkins, and Edward Fuller. Surnames include Aiken,Atherton, Bowen, Brintnall, Bulkeley, Chandler, Dayton, Hartson, Howland, Ingraham, Learned, Leland, Mattson, Morse, Parke, Penfield, Prescott, Sherman, Stearns, Stedman, Warren, Wheeler, Whipple, and Williams. Notable kin through these families include seventeen US presidents: Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Woodrow Wilson, George Bush 1&2, Gerald Ford, Ulysses S Grant, James Garfield, Franklin Pierce, Calvin Coolidge, William Howard Taft, Rutherford B. Hayes, Millard Fillmore, Herbert Hoover, and Richard Nixon; British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill; Lady Diana, Princess of Wales; Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Henry David Thoreau, and Tennessee Williams; Clara Barton and Susan B. Anthony; Union Generals William Tecumseh Sherman and George Brinton McClellan; Col. William Prescott (American commander at Bunker Hill); Orville and Wilbur Wright, Robert Goddard (rocket scientist), William Hickling Prescott (historian), and George Hoyt Whipple (1934 Nobel Prize in medicine); Pete Seeger; Brigham Young, John "Johnny Appleseed" Chapman, and James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok. Notable kin also include US vice president Aaron Burr, who killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel; and Charles Julius Guiteau, who assassinated James Garfield. Also included are William and Elizabeth Tuttle of New Haven; the parents of two murderers, one murder victim, two children called insane, and one called incompetent. Truly, these are family skeletons. The sources for my notable kin connections are Ancestors of American Presidents and Notable Kin Vols 1&2; all by Gary Boyd Roberts. I am especially indebted to the efforts of Mary Heald Heindel, who published the "Heald-Chaffee Genealogy" after 50 years of family research; to Andrew Hendry, who has graciously shared his Penfield history; and to Linda M. Welch, who got me started in Chester, Vt. See the Photo Section for nine generations of Healds and their homes. See the Related Links Section for an easy way to search my family tree.
