I am searching for descendants of John Hedgecoth (born Hitchcock) and his wife Elizabeth Anderson. John was born around 1777; Elizabeth was born around 1783. They were married in 1805, and lived in Cumberland County, Tennessee, USA. I'm interested in finding out about any of their descendants, as well as about John and Elizabeth themselves. Since John and the United States of America were born at almost the same time, the Hedgecoth story parallels the development of our country. John and Elizabeth could hardly have imagined the number of their progeny after more than two centuries. They certainly couldn't have foreseen their descendants' changing lifestyles nor the influences they've brought to so many areas of life. This list is, of course, a work in progress. There is always some new piece of information to discover, and new things are always happening to the members of this family. I must insert a disclaimer here. I have not personally confirmed all of the information in these reports. I have attempted, however, to include only information from sources who are credible because of their direct contact with original documents or with the pertinent family members. Please keep this in mind as you use this data. Contact me if you would like information on the source(s) used for a particular item. I would also appreciate knowing about any sources that confirm, contradict, correct, or add to any information listed here. Many people are responsible for helping compile the beginning stages of this data: -- Deborah Hedgecoth and Carolyn Hamby Hedgecoth provided the most thorough information on the early generations of this family, thereby establishing the research "roots" from which this family tree grew. -- The members of Lee Martin Hedgecoth's clan (son of Doctor Gunn) are my aunts, uncles, and first cousins--and parents and sister too--and they have been providing me information for years. To save space here, I hope they won't mind if I ask you to look 'em all up in the Outline Descendant Tree. -- Information on other branches of Doctor Gunn's line has been provided by Nancy Manning, Katherine Swan Rutherford, Wanda Carter Turner, Ken Billings, Ernestine Cox Partin, Flogene Cox Messer, Shirley Scott Barrs, Kaye Frisbie, Julie Hedgecoth Long, Mary Hedgecoth Denton, Gordon Statum, Judy Hedgecoth, and Sharon Hedgecoth Crum. -- Carolyn Hamby Hedgecoth, Mary Hedgecoth King, Judy King Sanders, Martha Childress Proctor, and Louise Hedgecoth Watkins sent information about the line of John and Elizabeth's son James Daniel. -- Edward Oakes, Alfred Hedgecoth, and Sandra Hedgecoth Copeland provided information on the line of Alford Alexander Hedgecoth (John's grandson). -- Larry Jones sent information about the line of John's son William A. Hedgecoth. There have been many other contributors, and I hope there will continue to be more. All are appreciated by me and those who read these reports. By the way, Hedgecoths DO spell the name in different ways. The two most common in this family are Hedgecoth and Hedgcoth--so if you think you see a mistake, it may not be. Or it might.
