The Hitchcock Hedgecock Hedgcock Family Home Page

Updated September 5, 2000

The progenitor of my Family is William Hitchcock I who settled in Calvert Co, MD about 1650. His only surviving son William Hitchcock II removed to a part of Baltimore Co, MD that is now Harford Co, MD, eg East of the Little Gunpowder River 3 1/2 miles above where the tide makes on same River which was very near what was the Town of Joppa.
My line continues though William Hitchcock III, son of William Hitchcock II and his first wife Mary, to John Hitchcock who was born in Baltimore Co, in 1446/47. John and his three brothers William, Issac and Joshua, and at least one sister, migrated to the Rowan/Guilford Co, NC area during the Revolutionary Period. One son, Josiah, remained in Harford Co, MD.

William IV died in Guilford Co, NC c. 1811, Isaac died in Rowan Co, now Davidson Co, NC c. 1798; John, my ancestor, died in Guilford Co, NC c. 1832 and is buried in Abbotts Creek Primitive Baptist Cem., Davidson Co, NC. Joshua's migrated to Ashe Co, NC and then to KY where he died.

Many of the second generation in NC adopted the spelling of the surname as Hedgecock and my line when it migrated to IL in 1844 to Hedgcock.

Of the three spellings of the surname Hedgcock is the smallest with about only 60 in all the phone books in America, Hedgecock, larger but still small, about 260 in all the phone books in America and Hitchcock, several thousands in all the phone books in America. The William Hitchcock line is as large as the Luke and Matthias Hitchcock of CT lines in America.

The Family is now scattered throughout America and the known spellings of the surname are Hitchcock, Hedgecock, Hedgcock and Hedgecoe.

Early allied families in MD and NC include: Tacker, Tolby/Talby/Taulbee, Norris, Whitaker, Jones, Carroll and Slade.

William Hitchcock III also had several daughters and one son, Asahel by his second wife Ann Jones who is thought to be his step-sister, eg William Hitchcock I's relict married William Jones (his wife had died) of Calvert shortly after the death of her husband. Asahel left several sons all of which retained the spelling of the surname as Hitchcock. Some of his descendants remained in Md and many migrated to KY, OH and other frontieers.

In order to research my Family it has been necessary to research all lines of the Hitchcock Family, and adopted spellings of the surname, in America. This has resulted in the compiling of a Hitchcock Family Data Base which now contains about 35,000 individual names on-line and another 20,000 off-line. I will search same for an researcher interested in the Hitchcock Family, and adopted spellings of the surname.
