23.JOHN CHARLES4 HEENAN (THOMAS3, PATRICK2, GREAT GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER1) was born Feb 02, 1880 in Cloninaha, Tipperary, Ireland, and died Jun 10, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois, USA.He married MARY TUOHY 1908 in Chicago, Illinois, USA, daughter of MARTIN TUOHY and BRIDGET CLIFFORD.
Notes for JOHN CHARLES HEENAN:
My grandfather, "John Charles Heenan" was born on February 2, 1880, in Cloninaha, Ballinderry, in the Union of Nenagh, County of Tipperary, Ireland .He was the fifth of eleven siblings, born to Thomas and Hanora (Cahalan) Heenan.John Charles was baptized in Terryglass, a the Roman Catholic Church Parochial House, in the District of Portroe, in the Unions of Nenagh, County of Tipperary, Ireland.
At the age of 25, John Charles, well educated, standing six feet tall, with a pale complexion, brown hair and green eyes , set out for America. As typical as it was in those days in Irish families, when a male "heir" decided to leave, a cash settlement would be given to compensate for the heir's loss in the families' estate. As the story goes, John Charles' father Thomas (1844 - 18--), who was "land rich, but cash poor", did so by giving John Charles a significant sum of money (I believe this money was really land). However, before leaving for America, John Charles, charmed by his brother Rody (1876 - 19--), lent his inheritance to Rody who stated, "since you won't need this money until you're settled in America, I can look out for it and send it over when you need it".The problem with lending the money to Rody was that Rody was a drinker. He lost the money (or land) and John Charles never saw a penny of his family's inheritance.Furthermore, the story goes on to site that when Hanora, known as Nora, (John Charles' mother) heard of this incident it broke her heart and shortly thereafter she died.

Marriage Notes for JOHN HEENAN and MARY TUOHY:
The purpose for John Charles leaving Ireland was supposedly to come to America and look after an elder Aunt (his mothers widowed sister) "Auntie Farrell".Two years after coming to America in 1905, John Charles met a young, beautiful 26 year old Mary Touhy.Mary, a fellow Irishman, was born to Martin and Bridget (Clifford) Tuohy, on February 28, 1881.Mary was born in Castlelough, District of Portroe in the Union of Nenagh, County of Tipperary, Ireland.Mary, a farmer's daughter, was officially entered into the registry of Certification of Births and Deaths in Ireland on March 7, 1881.
At the age of 27, John Charles knew that Mary was special and he began courting her.Mary's mother Bridget (Clifford) Tuohy died during the birth of her fifth child, Joseph.Since Mary was the eldest she became the surrogate matriarch for the family. When Joseph was old enough Mary had decided to leave Ireland and the farm. She had arranged to come to Chicago through the sponsorship of her cousin Mary Dureck. At the age of 26 (1907), Mary utilized her matriarchal experience and became a domestic or housekeeper in Chicago.
After less than a year of courtship, John Charles asked Mary to marry him (1908).By the following July, July 26, 1909, Mary and John Charles became the proud parents of their first wee one, Lenore. The story goes that even through John Charles held the dream of owning his own farm in America, his dream never came to pass.First because his brother took his inheritance, and second because his true love viewed America as a way out of farming.Hence, John Charles became a City of Chicago Policeman in order to support his family.

Center on Fullerton Avenue in Chicago.Gladys went up to the boy and asked him for a dance, the boy acted as though he had never met her before.Insulted, Gladys, told the boy off, only to find out that this boy was not Frank, but his younger brother William. Embarrassed, she apologized profusely; they laughed and danced the night away.William was such a good dancer that Gladys fell "over the moon" and two years later they were married. William was such a fersiforious reader that he had little problem in pursuing pilot training. He was sent to Louisiana for specialized training in navigation. When he made Captain of a bombing squadron known as the 415th Bombing Group he was shipped to Newport News for the final training sessions. It was at this time that William and Gladys wed on April 15, 1944 , in a small chapel at Langley Airforce Base.Shortly after their nuptials, William and Gladys began their honeymoon by driving a car across country. As the story goes, while on this drive, Gladys taught William how to drive a car for the first time.Remember that at that time there were no automatic transmissions, so Gladys would drive until they reached the rural roads, away from traffic, she would then pull over and Bill would take the wheel.Although Bill could fly B-17's, he could not get used to the position of the traffic lights.Evidently, at that time all traffic lights were located on a low post on the right corner of each intersection.According to Gladys, Bill, "blew" every light from Virginia to New Mexico. When Gladys and Bill arrived in New Mexico, they rented a small room in the middle of nowhere.Gladys, a city girl, woke up the first morning to see a cow's head peering at her through the motel window. And so to was the beginning of my mother and fathers' life together. |

25.BRIDGET4 HEENAN (THOMAS3, PATRICK2, GREAT GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER1) was born Dec 05, 1888 in Cloninaha, Tipperary, Ireland, and died Feb 11, 1947 in Ashgrove, Tipperary, Ireland. She married MICHAEL TIERNEY in Terryglass Church.
Notes for BRIDGET HEENAN:
Bridget's baptismal witnesses were James Cahalan and Judy (Heenan) Cahalan.
The ninth child born to Thomas and Nora (Cahalan) Heenan was Bridget.Bridget was born onDecember 5, 1888. James Cahalan and Mrs. Cahalan sponsored Bridget at her baptism.Bridget married a man by the name of Michael Tierney, who was from Macloon.Following Bridget and Michael's wedding, they moved in with Bridget's parents into the Ashgrove Estate.Bridget was given ownership of the estate as a wedding gift.Bridget had one daughter who died young. She died childless on February 8, 1947.Shortly following her death, Michael Tierney remarried Alice McCarthy of Cloughjordan.Together Mick and Alice had six sons. The Ashgrove Estatestill is in the Tierney Family Name.
Although, in the book How We Were in the parish of Kilbarron-Terryglass, Co. Tipperary, Ms. Bridie O'Brien writes that William Heenan wasa steward on the "Ashgrove" property which had belonged to Rev. Benjamin Talbot as of 1902.Family history and census records of 1864 and 1901 know this to be false. For according to 1864 Census records it was Patrick Heenan, Bridget's grandfather who was the sole owner of "Ashgrove".Furthermore, cencus records completed on April 6, 1901, by John Costelloe, Constable, document that Patrick Heenan was the owner of the Asgrove Property where Fanny Talbot resided.Futhermore, family history tells us that Thomas, Bridget's father bought the Asgrove Estate from his father. And Thomas, gave this property to Bridget as her wedding gift.Michael and Bridget Tierney (née Heenan) move onto what was known as the most beautiful property owned by the Heenan’s, "Ashgrove".
While living, Bridget was known to support the "boyos".During the War of Independence, Bridget's father turned Ashgrove into a "safe house".Another error written about in Ms. O’Brien’s book included the following:
"...One night the police got a tip-off that a crowd of the "boys" was at Ashgrove. There was, in fact, a card school going on, one of the players being "Kruger"Heenan. The story goes that two lorry loads of Black and Tans were sent to raid the house."....
But in reality, it was my great Aunt Bridget, who saved these fella's.Kruger Heenan was our relation who was a key player in the IRB Tipperary Division.Family oral history tells us that, the fella’s and Kruger came to visit Kruger’s cousin Bridget. That the fella's were playing cards, while Bridget played the piano. When the word came to the house by Jack O'Neill that the “Black and Tan” were going to raid Ashgrove, Bridget, who was a brilliant pianist, moved the piano, threw back the tapestry rug, and hid the fella's under the floor boards of the parlour. After putting everything back in place, Bridget returned to playing the piano while awiting the RIC's arrival. When the RIC raided "Ashgrove" looking for the lads Bridget continued to play the piano as if nothing was happening. And thanks to my great Aunt Bridget, the lads were never found and were then able to escape after the RIC left the house.
Furthermore, Bridget had a reputation as a kind and generous women. She would often leave food out on the window ledge at night for those who were hungry. And after acquiring Ashgrove as her inheritance, and learning of her brother John Charles' misfortunes with the lose of the"Paddy's Pub" and its property,Bridget sent £500 to John as a down payment on the loss of his inheritance by Rody.Together Michael and Bridget Tierney (nee Heenan) gave birth to only one child. However, the baby girl died shortly after birth.Bridget was known to have stomach problems and on February 11, 1947 she died at the age of 59. Following the death of Bridget, Michael Tierney remarried Alice McCarthy. And due to the land ownership rights in Ireland at that time, "Ashgrove", the Heenan Families most beautiful prestigious piece of property became the ownership of the Tierney estate.Michael Tierney and Alice née McCarthy had 3 children;Martin Tierney, Timothy Tierney and Brendan Tierney.Michael's son by his second wife, Martin and his wife Carmel are still residing on "Ashgrove" as of 1998.Brendon built a bungelow house on the Ashgrove land. Both families are living there today.Timothy also is in the middle of building on the property today.Timothy is married to Marie who is a Heenan via the Cahalans. They are living all on Ashgrove today (1998).
