John Tobias Heil was married to Margaret Young in Germany. They were of the Mennonite Faith. They immigrated to Canada in the mid-1800's and first settled around Welland, Ontario. There they found that the topsoil was fairly shallow with stone underneath and with the cold winters, the crops were slow in getting started and were of poor quality. In the early 1870's, they move to Essex County and farmed the land on the old German Line (which was renamed the Renaud Line and is now called the O'Brien Sideroad) located in Maidstone Township. John Tobias was killed at a barn raising on February 14, 1876, he was 59 years, 1 month and 2 days old. He was buried at the Puce Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Margaret, his wife, lived with her son John until her death on December 19, 1903, she was 86 years old.

Both John and Margaret are buried at St. Andrews - St. Claire Beach, Lot 4 of Tecumseh Road, Puce Cemetery. (name on the tombstone is spelled Hiel)

From the marriage of John and Margaret there were five children: George, Elizabeth, Adam, John and Catherine. George and Elizabeth were born in Germany.
