This family photo of Pvt. William T. Hanna and his fiance, USMC corporal Bertha Santos, was taken several months before he was killed in the Solomon Islands in 1942. He received the Navy Cross for the heroics leading to his death. He was cited for "holding his position and exacting a tremendous toll on the enemy."
