I am descended from many lines of early settlers to Massachusetts. My mother's family (Paine) arived in 1635 at Hingham, Mass. My father's family (and my name) is from several German lines in the 1880's. They settled first in Chicago,Ill. Both my mother and father are also descended from Swedish ancestors who settled in Danville and Chicago, Illinois in the 1860's. I am preparing a memoir of my great grandfather for (limited) publication. He built many of the railroads in Vermont in the 1850's and 60's and then moved to Chicago to develop the west. He was president of the Panama railroad, which was built before the Canal. |
