| I am the last male of childbearing age in my lineage of the surname Helwig. Only one other male, another Robert Helwig (who is young and not yet of childbearing age) carries the weight of my lineage. I am getting too old to hope to have children of my own (although I did raise two step-children). The other Robert Helwig, my nephew, probably carries the genetic trait of many of my ancestors: we have female children. So there is a great possibility that the line of my great grandfather, Nicholas Helwig, will soon end. If you look into the history of this family line you will find nothing much of import. Surnames of Seibel, Scheib, Steedle, Dipple, Leurant (or Laurent), Dubois, and others make up the genetic pool that coarses through my body. But I am just an average man, from average stock, with average ways, and average means, in average times. There are many stories to tell. Most of these are anecdotes and family rumanings that warm the cold winter nights or send a cool breeze on a hot summers eve. Tales of kindness, generosity, sarcasm, wit, insight, and whimsy. No great history book heros here, but family ghosts that still haunt today their ancestors with their humanity. What was of this race? What will come of the line? I take this task in hand to find out the hidden mysteries of my past, and the possibilities of the future. These are the stories that grip the soul, and feed the heart. I offer up this poem: The Science of Life How different through strange eyes Life seems to be Or does the observer Change the observing As Heisenberg once said How similar things seem When one tries to change And struggles with it all Momentum ever pushing To keep things the same How difficult times have become Did we do this ourselves? Or maybe Occum's razor Tells us that we are overstating And the simple things are truest Tempest fugit? Do clocks lie? Einstein had a few thoughts to say Time and space are linked So if we run out of time or space Where do we turn next? Hawkings? Copyright, 2002 Robert Andrew Helwig So..............
