Ancestors of Murvin Ruth Josey

Generation No. 6

      32. John Josey151,152,153,154,155,156,157,158,159, died 1807 in Sumner Co., TN. He married 33. Patsy ?.

      33. Patsy ?160.

Notes for John Josey:
First record of the purchase of land in Sumner County, TN by John Josey was in 1796 (see endnotes). He may have been from Virginia or from Northhampton or Halifax Co. NC. There seem to be two groups of Josey's in NC during the 18th century. The Josey (or Jossey) family in Northhampton and Halifax Counties is of English descent and came to NC from Nansemond Co., VA. Some members of the family remained in Virginia however. The Josey family (Josse) of Rowan County, NC are of German descent. Clyde Josey (my grandfather) said that his family was of English descent.

Notes for Patsy ?:
I'm speculating that Patsy Josey, who purchased the majority of John Josey's possesions in the sale of his estate, was his wife.

Children of John Josey and Patsy ? are:
16 i.   Allen Josey, born Abt. 1788 in North Carolina; married Nancy McKinsey January 22, 1805 in Sumner County, TN.
ii.   Sally Josey, born Abt. 1789; died Bef. 1818; married Jonathan Trousdale May 21, 1806 in Sumner County, TN161; born April 07, 1780 in Orange Co., NC; died Aft. 1839.
iii.   Elizabeth Josey, born Abt. 1792 in Tennessee; married James McKinsey February 24, 1816 in Sumner County, TN161; born Abt. 1792 in Tennessee.
  iv.   John C. Josey162,163,164,165, born Bet. 1795 - 1798; married Rebecca Lewis December 30, 1815 in Muhlenberg Co., KY166.
  Notes for John C. Josey:
This is purely speculative. John C. Josey appears in the census for Muhlenburg Co, KY in 1820, 1830 and 1840. There is a marriage record for John C. Josey and Rebecca Lewis in Dec. 30, 1815. In the 1820 census they are both between 16-26 years old and have three girls under 10. John is engaged in agriculture. In the 1830 census are between 30 and 40 and have two boys 5-9 years old, four girls 10-15 and three girls under 5. In the 1840 census they are between 40 and 50 and have one boy 15-19, one boy 20-29, 2 girls 15-19, and three girls 10-14. I haven't found John and Rebecca Josey after this, but several Joseys (listed as their children here) show up in the 1850 census in Christian Co., KY, close neighbors to the newly arrived Tennessee Josey's: Benjamin and Allen, and the James McKinsey's (Elizabeth Josey, Allen's sister). I'm speculating that Allen also had a brother, John, who moved to Muhlenberg Co., KY after he served with Allen in the First Tennessee Volunteers (with Andrew Jackson), Creek Indian War, 1813. "Allen Josa" and "John Josa" are listed on the payroll of the Volunteer Infantry commanded by Capt. John Wallace of the Regiment commanded by Col. Edward Bradley. There is also a record for "Allen Josey" in another listing of this regiment.

  v.   Martha Josey167,168, born Abt. 1806 in Tennessee; married John Morris January 01, 1830 in Sumner County, TN169.
  Notes for Martha Josey:
Martha Josey may be the daughter of Allen Josey, rather than John. I didn't find John Morris with wife Martha in Sumner Co., TN, but I did find one in Muhlenberg Co., KY: John Morris, 45, blacksmith, born in TN and Martha Morris, 42, born in TN. Martha Morris, 55 is living with Allen Josey's son, William T. L. Josey in Christian Co., in 1860. One or both could be Martha Josey.

      34. ? McKinsey

Children of ? McKinsey are:
17 i.   Nancy McKinsey, died Bef. 1850; married Allen Josey January 22, 1805 in Sumner County, TN.
ii.   James McKinsey, born Abt. 1792 in Tennessee; married Elizabeth Josey February 24, 1816 in Sumner County, TN170; born Abt. 1792 in Tennessee.

      46. Thomas Lawrence171,172,173, born Bet. 1781 - 1790 in NC. He married 47. ?.

      47. ?, born Bet. 1794 - 1800 in NC.

Notes for Thomas Lawrence:
The Lawrence family seem to have migrated from North Carolina to Tennessee between 1817 and 1819. That Thomas is the father of the family is a guess at this point, based upon the number and ages of children in Sumner Co., TN censuses 1820 and 1830.

Children of Thomas Lawrence and ? are:
  i.   Mark W. Lawrence174, born Abt. 1815 in NC; married (1) Rebecca Poteat; born Abt. 1818 in NC; died Abt. 1860 in Sumner Co., TN; married (2) Malinda Emaline West September 08, 1868 in Sumner Co., TN; born August 13, 1839 in Sumner Co., TN; died April 03, 1918.
ii.   Elvina M. Lawrence175, born Abt. 1817 in NC; married Robert Shepherd October 15, 1842 in Sumner Co., TN176; died Bef. 1850 in Sumner Co., TN.
23 iii.   Justina S. Lawrence, born Bet. 1818 - 1819 in TN; married Walter W. Melven October 10, 1840 in Sumner County, TN.
iv.   Lewis W. Lawrence, born Abt. 1825 in Sumner Co., TN; died Abt. 1898 in Gallatin, Sumner, TN; married Eliza Patton August 16, 1860 in Gallatin, Sumner, TN; born Abt. 1842 in TN; died Bet. 1886 - 1900 in Gallatin, Sumner, TN.
  v.   John Jehue Lawrence, born Abt. 1827 in TN.
